Can't believe I'm asking such a basic Q. Also that I have to ask...

Imported a shed loas of email from an old IMAP account into and exchange account.
In Outlook everything is perfectly fine but bloody Mail insists on sorting only sent emails by the date they were imported, even though the emails show the actual date received. Properly frustrating.

A few hints on the internet say to just select sort by date received from View but my View menu doesn't have that option. The only sort option easily found is the simple oldest/newest toggle.

Any tips?

ta much

So the app is only looking at the date the mail file was created - the import date. Hmmm. That’s not nearly as smart as I thought Mail App would be.

Of course despite all my vetting, “favoriting” and various cussing, Mail continues to randomly dump emails I want (from mailing lists, yes, but only SOME mailing lists) into the spam folder, so maybe I have been giving Mail too much credit.

Doc, are you using an odd Mail view? I use the classic view I'm used to, dating back to the PPC days. In the mails pane, I click on the column header for Date Received. It sorts just fine.

If you're using some odd or newer view mode without column headers, you could switch to a classic view to implement the sort. If Date-Received is not in your columns, you can add it via Mail -> View -> Columns -> Date Received.

I get this

As you can see the only showing option is sort by date (flip newest to oldest)
In view options I get this

You're viewing with Organize by Conversation, which groups related emails. That's probably why the Received By column is missing, as groups have divergent arrival dates. I've avoided the Conversations approach, so no experience in tweaking it.

You could switch to non-conversation mode, which will make Date Received appear. Click on the column header to sort. (make column appear first if need be) Then switch back to your usual settings, see if it maintains the sort.

(this step might be optional) I use Prefs -> Viewing -> [x] Use classic layout
I uncheck Prefs -> Viewing -> View conversations: [_] Include related messages
Also uncheck View (menu) -> Organize by Conversation

I've unticked view by conversation to unthread everything

and there's still no option to view by date received only "date"

I'm on Mojave, and "classic view" has been present for a long time. If you're on Catalina, then Apple may have sold us classic users down the river.

Yes, Catalina. I think Apple have stripped a pile of stuff out of mail app. As they do, because who uses stuff in depth?
Outlook works just fine.
