as the subject says, i bought a new digital camera today, a fujifilm S5100.

i have a song dsc-p32 which is nice for little point and shoot photos. no zoom, no great features. i gets me by. but i have always wanted something more professional.

i am not a professional by any stretch of the word, but my other camera is just *too* basic. spending $799 on something like the nikon coolpix 8700 would have been too much.
i found this fuji for $350 at best buy, on special from $399.

4 megapixel (same as my sony, which i am happy with the quality)
10x optical zoom (which i am in love with)
burst mode is very nice. one mode shoots up to 40 photos. i need to test this on something moving. might go to universal studios next week, rollercoasters would be a good subject.
supports RAW mode. hopefully iphoto5 will support the files.

i wanted to post this just incase anyone else is thinking of a new camera. i would advise this camera for someone else on a budget and not looking for anything too professional.

some photos i took today.

other than the chess piece and fan, they are all on 10x optical zoom, with subjects being between 3 - 5 meters (10 - 15 feet) (squirrels) and 20 meters (60 feet) (cooker & sign)

Sure does look warm...

are you obsessed with squirrels or just over-run by them?

Looks like a nice SLR-like camera. 10x optical zoom and RAW is a big plus. Congratulations. Thanks for the "warm" looking pictures - it's snowing and it's 2F here right now.

a bit of both. those photos were taken at college tonight. there are so many squirrels on my campus. they are always around the trees and in the grass, about 4 or 5 to a group, and lots of groups.

Ive got an S5000 in addition to my Olympus E-100RS.
Great camera; burst mode only works with 1MP resolution though - I used it to to photograph a Marathon here in town.

The only thing that bothers me about Fuji is the awful compression they use; but iPhoto 5 might be able to fix that when they support RAW import for Fuji.

mdc - do you ever get any red squirrels in Florida, or have the grey ones killed them all off?

i am obsessed with squirrels too. I took a lot of squirrels pictures at close range. they are indeed smart with good people skills.

i was looking through the settings on the camera and there are two 4mp settings. normal and fine. one saves photos at around 1mb and the other at around 2mb. i took photos of the same thing with each setting and the 2mb one does look better and sharper.

I have not been here for all that long, but i think i heard something once about grey squirrels coming in and killing all the red ones.
