Rev-D model...every 10 minutes or so I hear a very quiet "dropping of a pingpong ball from a short distance" as if the CD or fan is clicking down or something. Has anyone else heard this?

I hear that every now and then also. It's probably just the hard drive spinning up or down. I wouldn't be concerned about it unless it's a loud clicking sound from the hard drive. Since you have a rev. D, it could also be the hard drive parking from that new sensor they have to preserve your hard drive during movement of the PB.
