Before I had an ibook I had an imac and you could change your monitor so the screen was stretched wider, larger, smaller... or even diagonally. Can you do this on the new ibooks? I've looked in my system prefs but haven't seen anything about it. Just curious.

LCDs generally have fixed geometry. You can select a lower resolution however that will result in quite a fuzzy looking picture.
Just out of curiosity, why would you want/need to change it?

Yeah, LCDs should have perfect geometry. CRTs had so many options as they were always dealing with so many different variables (they are thrown off by magnetic fields), and you were often trying to display a flat image on a curved screen.

The iBook displays are native 1024x768, but you can drop it to 800x600 or 640x480 in System Prefs -> Displays. Dunno why anyone would want to do that, though.

Some people may want to downgrade to connect to a TV or older LCD projector.

Yeah but you might as well just apply the spanning hack and then adjust the external display's resolution independently of your main screen. No sense in screwing up your window and icon layout over nothing.
