I run a G4 iMac 700 running OSX 10.4.7. I noticed a couple weeks ago that Software Update wouldn't open, so I rebooted thinking that would help, but then got tied up in other things and completely forgot to check it again. So tonight I tried to finally install iTunes 7, but it won't even open the installer (it starts to but immediately closes it again). So I tried Software Update again, but it is still doing the same thing--I try to open it, but it immediately closes System Preferences and says "the application System Preferences quit." However, a random check of the other functions in system preferences show that they are working okay. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I'm realizing now that it's been quite awhile since I updated my software, and so I have no idea how long this might have actually been a problem. I'd really appreciate any help.

you could try this:
create another account, make it an admin account.
login into that, see if you can run software update.

not a fix, but a way perhaps to at least run updates
(until you figure out whats happening...)

That didn't work either. I'm baffled. Further testing indicates that it won't let me download any software (with the exception of a widget I was able to download). I tried to manually go in and download the many software updates I have not received, and it won't let any of them load. For example, I tried the recent security update, and it acted like it was opening, but just as quickly closed without downloading. I also tried iTunes 7 and the same thing happened. Nothing with download.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Can anyone make even a guess about what might be causing this, or what might solve it? I'm completely at a loss.

Go into Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and repair your hard drive and your permissions. If that doesn't help, you might want to run a Rember test to be sure that your memory is still good.

Also, it might help if you can post your crash logs, which can be found in Applications > Utilities > Console.

I ran disk utility to repair the permissions--still doesn't work. I did a Rember test, and it came back that all tests passed fine. I found last night that Sherlock doesn't work now either. When I click it on the Dock, it bounces twice and then stops--like it's trying to open, but then can't. Here is the Sherlock crash log:

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on? This is obviously not right, but I don't know what to do to repair it. I've tried to reboot many times, but that doesn't help. I've used disk utility several times and that didn't work either. If anyone has any more suggestions of what I could do, please let me know.

HOWEVER, I just edited this message because I just realized that I only repaired the permissions and NOT the hard drive itself. My question is, when I looked on Apple's web site about using the Disk Utility, it said to "use the Mac OS X Install disk THAT CAME WITH YOUR COMPUTER." Is that true, or do you use the install disc from the latest version of OS X you are running? I'm curious especially since I can't find my copy of Tiger. (we recently moved, lots of stuff in storage and boxes still, and I have no idea where it is.) Do I use the original Install disk, even if that was several versions of OS X ago?

So I found my OS X Tiger disk, and did the Disk Utility and repair, and it said it repaired several things, so I was hopeful, but when I rebooted, it still didn't work. It still won't let me run Software Update. I still can't run Sherlock. I don't know what to do. Do I need to reinstall the entire OS?

Maybe I have a sick sense of humor, but I find it quite amusing that crashdump crashed.

Post those crash logs that the console told you about, the ones in /Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter, and maybe they'll contain some clues. Or maybe not, but there's no harm in trying.

Hmm, check Library/PreferencePanes (both at the root of your drive and in your home folder) and see if there are any third-party preference panes installed. If there are, temporarily uninstall them by dragging them to the Desktop and see if that helps at all.

[Curiosity]

There is something else you can try. Go to Apple's update page, download the latest combo update, and apply it. I had a problem with the automatic update, and a combo update fixed it.
