I accidentally made a huge scratch in my iMac's monitor. Anyone know if I can fix this short of replacing it?

Automobile window crack repair stuff? They manage to fix cracks, and you cannot see anything wrong afterwards.

While trying to open my Mac. It must have been some sand on the couch that scratched it.

Hmm... don't know what to say. Removing scratches from glass is tricky because it's transparent. I know that you can rub toothpaste on plastic to remove scratches, so maybe that's worth a shot.
Bummer about your display... how big is the scratch? Is it very noticeable?

Clarification: I was not referring to a repair service, I was thinking of those repair kits sold in auto supply stores. They include a tube or two of some clear epoxy stuff. You might be able to fill the scratch.
The tricky part would be insuring a smooth surface where the filler meets the rest of the screen. I have not been able to think of a process that would work. Maybe if the liquid were applied with the iMac screen-up, it will just fill the crack flush with the rest of the monitor. You would leave the iMac in face-up position until the stuff sets.

Another possibility: antique repair. With antiques the only authentic replacement parts are those cannibalized from another antique. Antique glasswork has to be repaired or lived with.
You might check with a friend in the antiques scene to see if someone can fill scratches invisibly.

You should be able to get it out with a auto glass scratch kit from Eastman's. Not sure if they have a website or not, but for 30 bucks you can get a bunch of buffing wheels (for a drill), and some special compound. You dont fill the scratch in, you just smooth away the rest of the glass down to it. It should work fine.

If the "scratch" was from a (soft) metal object, its more likely that the scratch is actually just the metal ground onto the glass... If this is the case it can be removed by acids (like that is used in pc board etching).

This may sound kinda stupid on my part, but are you able to get a new iMac under warranty?

Warranty doesn't cover this kind of damage.

I can sympathize with you. When I pulled my new iMac DVSE outta the box, my watch scratched the monitor slightly. The problem is that the glass has a coating on it - it's anti-glare. So, my not so deep scratch actually took the coating off -nothing more, but that doesn't help. Your scratch may be like that or deeper, but I fear there is no remedy. I did cry (or at least I swore until my wife shut me down). It sucks, but you kinda have to live with it.

Apparently there is no kit to fix scratches. I guess I'll have to learn to live with it, or have the monitor replaced. Oh well...
