Bite the bullet and buy a G5?

I was only looking to spend about $1000. I found a 1.42DP MDD for about $1600 that I really want. Then I thought about just shelling out the rest and getting a G5 2GHz. Is the performance increase enough to justify the price? I just don't know if the extra $1000 is worth it at this point. Any input?

MacOfAllTrades.com has an excellent deal on reconditioned G4 1.42MP/120GB/512MB/SuperDrive models for $1,299.
I'd hop on that, it is an excellent price.

It really depends on what you want to use the machine for. I purchased my dual 1.42 (refurb from Small Dog) in July of last year and have put it to work as a video editing machine. It's a fine machine and I'm glad I did what I did then.
Today, I'd put money into a G5, for its compatibility with the latest graphics cards and because there are affordable hard drive expansion options available for this machine that were not available when I went for the last-gen G4.
I will upgrade to a G5 once Apple releases the third update. I hope that Apple will build in Airport and/or Bluetooth (not likely), that Apple will design the machine to house more than one extra hard drive and dual optical drives (possible), and that Apple will include Tiger with the next upgrade (who knows).

In many benchmarks, the single G5s kill the dual G4s, so spend some extra cash (or not) and go G5. What you spend now, you get back by being able to keep your machine longer and sell it at a higher price.
I just wait, coz I want a post-G4 PowerBook
