So glad I just purchased the quicksilver duel 1ghz for 5000 dollars aus to find out there's a new G5 coming out in a few weeks. Read below...
is this common knowledge or did I just not research enough??
Mac really sucks sometimes!

Dear Client

Ok this is the big one for the year. The IBM PowerPC 970 chip that Apple has been working on behind the scenes is about to hit. Apple announced to dealers last night that the G5 will be arriving with 2 weeks. As I found out independently of the non disclosure agreement that the dealers are tied into I'm spilling the beans now.

Most unexpectedly, Apple has released (finally) a 2 button mouse with a scroll wheel. This matches the new wireless keyboard. The top end G5 is a quad processor 2.3Ghz beast. This is certain to blow the fastest PC's out of the water completely.

The new PowerPC 970 chip has been used in IBM's high end servers for a short while and has been redesigned slightly for the new G5 range. Still included is internal multi-threading (as per Intel's 3Ghz chip) & 64 bit processing.

Word is for 3 models as per with previous releases of G4 desktops. Pricing, info and pictures to follow. Supposedly the case design has been radically redesigned, but as I haven't seen it yet I can't comment. Reaction has been mixed to this new case but it's what it inside that is most important.

Overall specs are impressive :

Released with Mac OS X 10.2.5 (which supports processor multi-threading)
PC3200 400MHz dual channel DDR RAM
- maximum RAM is now 8GB when using the latest 1GB RAM chips (not yet released)
Serial ATA and 133MHz IDE
800Mbps Firewire
USB 2
PCI X
Redesigned motherboard using the latest technology
Bluetooth wireless mouse and keyboard
Airport Extreme ready
Built in hardware RAID (only on the 133MHz IDE bus)
GeForce 4 Ti and Radeon 9700 display cards with 8x AGP
- which card depends on the particular G5 ordered

Model 1
G5/1.4GHz 256MB RAM/80GB HD/Combo

Model 2
G5/1.8GHzDP 256MB RAM/120GB HD/Superdrive

Model 3
G5/2.3GHzQP 512MB RAM/Dual 120GB HD RAID/Superdrive

Pricing is supposed to be similar to previous G4's. The top end model is likely to be a month or more away. The 2 lower end models will be available almost immediately. Expect the news and web sites to be full of this release soon as this is far too big to not leak very almost immediately.

Regards Mike

My favorite spec is this one. . .

"Redesigned motherboard using the latest technology"

Wow, I can't wait to see how Apple will spin that one.

If its True, Wonderful, if not, I wont lose sleep over it, but if it is true i hope the QP Machine doesnt cost both arms and both legs instead of the Current DP That just cost a Arm and a Leg. . But as I said before, Great if true, O well if not.

Sorry I didn't mean for my post to be offensive. It's just for me, until Apple says "this is what we have", I try not to believe or completely discount what specs pop up. I love the specs you've posted, it'll be great if Apple puts that out. I've also gotten my hopes up too, we were supposed to be at 1Ghz, what? 2 years ago or something? Hopefully IBM will break that old cliche of being stuck at one speed for a year or more.

So as I said, we shall see.

does anyone remember seeing an office shot of someone with a prototype power mac (i have no idea, g3 or g4)

it was running os x, and upon inspection of the tiny screen, the CPU monitor was running, and it had quad bars.

does anyone remember this?

seemed like a year or two ago.

On the off chance that the OP was serious: the spec is almost exactly what was published on MacOSRumors a couple weeks back. However, even they didn't think everything would make it into the machine, and they don't think it will come out this year.

Current speculation is that the 970 will be used in new Apple machines next year, though there is hope that it will be demoed at the next WWDC. I'm not holding my breath.

As for all the other features (PCI-X, USB2, Serial ATA, ATA 133) I don't think we'll see them until LATE next year. They're only just starting to become standard on PCs, after all.

If he is so reliable he should read IBM Page on the 970 due out 2nd half 2003 and speeds of 1.4 to 1.8. I think that we will see the G5 year but only with Panther i.e october time

Of course it'll be at 2.3Ghz, not that we havn't heard it will debute at 1.8 constantly and there was that one press release that put it at 2.5 which was pulled... so of COURSE it'll be at 2.3 after all that makes perfect sense! Lemmie guess it'll also have a Geforce FX, and it'll sport 8 USB 3 ports. I mean they only just came out with USB 2 but apple's on intel's good side right?

Will this quad machine also fart lightning bolts?

This doesn't have anything to do with the thread but since we're on the subject of release dates, AMD's Opteron is launching in 8 days. The slowest model will cost $344 while the fastest model will cost $804.
