I've set iPhoto to store it's pictures on another disc, since my main osx disc is quite full.
However when I load iPhoto I suspect that it still creates some temporarily copies to speed some things up, since I always get an error that my disc is full after a while playing with iPhoto.
My disc has some 380 mb free, but after using iPhoto for a while it gets full. Restarting my laptop does the trick most of the time...
Where is this temporary directory located and can I point it to another location?

The temporary folder is /tmp. you can't change the location. Always keep 4 GB (better 20%) of your boot volume free.

Of course, this problem could also be caused by virtual memory paging. That's why it's a good idea to keep lots of space free on your boot volume--because if a program is using a lot of memory, it's going to be shooting out VM files that will fill up your hard drive very quickly.
Just as a thought, though, wouldn't it be possible to change the /tmp symlink to point to another volume?
