CodeWeavers has launched CrossOver 12, a new version of its software designed to run Windows apps in OS X or Linux. The update implements a new version of Wine, the program's core technology, which is said to have received over 5,000 changes. Support has been improved for a number of Windows apps, such as Microsoft Office and several editions of Quicken. Newly compatible apps include Quicken 13 and World of Tanks; on Linux, Guild Wars 2 has been added.

Also new in CrossOver is the Mac Driver, a presently "experimental" feature which should eventually do away with the need to use X Window. Another benefit is better integration with OS X's native windowing system, for instance allowing Command-Tab to switch between fullscreen apps. CodeWeavers says it will gradually turn on the Mac Driver for specific apps where the technology is expected to help. The standard Mac edition of CrossOver 12 requires OS X Snow Leopard, and costs $60. Lower prices are available for people willing to sacrifice some support or upgrade options.

Problems with Office 2007 resolved

After upgrading to CrossOver 12, Office 2007 was broken - I couldn't open files and recent documents weren't accessible.

All of this was fixed by deleting the old installation of Office (Configure -> Manage Bottles then highlight Microsoft Office Bottle on left and click - [minus] option) and then reinstalling from the original disk (Configure -> Install Software) - works fine now!
