I'm trying to do a simple network with two iMacs running 10.2.8. Connect them, do the setup and they both see each other. There is one ethernet cable connecting the two computers together...

Update:
Problem fixed by restoring the defaults, restarting, fixing permissions and restarting again. Now it works like a charm. Must have been some glitch.
