I'm going to wait to answer this poll until I unload all my older stuff, but a 4400, 6500, 7600, and a beige G3 all are taking up residence in my closet at the moment.

When I do answer this poll it will probably be G4 of some kind. Found a guy in my zip code on eBay with a few 400MHz Gigabit Ethernet G4's with 17" Studio CRT's and good drive specs, but no RAM. He wants all of $130 for it, so maybe I'll be answering the poll sooner rather than later. PC100 RAM is still cheap and getting cheaper so it's all good.

The Cube was my last real desktop Mac. It's been PowerBook ever since, though at work I have access to a large number of shared Mac systems, should I need it.*

The Cube did double duty as a productivity machine and a gaming system for UT, Q3, Wolfie and lots of related mods. It rocked.

When Apple came out with the G5 towers, I simply found them too large for my work space. They couldn't even be fitted into an instrument rack sideways, let alone under my table. So I got a Shuttle XPC system for games instead. And I've hated every second of maintaining Windows, (where's my network! where's my CF card reader?!).

I'm hoping for a compact, small form factor Intel Mac to come out this summer. Big enough to host one display card (latest greatest etc.) but no more.

J

i have a G4 Dual 1.25 (mirrored doors, mostly used for pro tools/reason/peak/photoshop), still going strong! only changes i've made are extra RAM (1GB) and a LiteOn DVD burner.. gonna give it a couple more years until all my main apps go universal, Intel power macs should be worth the upgrade by then.

Had a rev A. Dual 2, but Apple replaced it after a year because one of the CPUs blew up & then the motherboard wouldn't stop freezing up. Now I have a Rev C Dual 2 (I think Rev C). less RAM slots, but has been solid as a rock.

Will be getting a Rev B Mac Pro.

Sawtooth G4, with a 1.4Ghz G4 upgrade, 768MB of RAM, 750GB of space on internal drives, a Pioneer DVD burner - 103 model, and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP card. Runs Tiger and screams now with the new video card.

I recently came back to Mac after 10 years with PC...my last Mac experience was with a Quadra in the early 90s. I had to switch due to a new job and they certainly loaded me down with Mac machines - albeit slightly out of date...

PowerMac Dual 1.25ghz G4 (MDD) 2.5gb RAM, 512mb ATI graphics
PowerMac Dual 1.0ghz G4 (MDD) 2.0gb RAM, 128mb ATI graphics
PowerMac Single 800mhz (QuickSilver) 1.5gb RAM, 128mb ATI graphics
PowerBook G4 1.25ghz 1.5gb RAM
and 2 PowerMac G4 455mhz with 768 RAM - I use these for file servers and backup. The backup machine has 4 200gb drives in a custom built apparatus, utilizing the cables for the optical drives.
At work I use a Quad G5 with 4gb RAM...amazing machine.

PowerMac MDD, Dual G4 867, 1.25gb of ram, 370gb hd space

Gets the job done, I'll probably be using it forever. At school though I use a pc laptop running gentoo linux because I can't afford to get an LCD for the mac and all i have is this giant apple CRT which doesn't fit on the desk in my dorm.

Alas, it's my work machine. I have a lowly iBook G4 800Mhz for home use.

In a desperate effort to not buy a new Mac Pro (since I really don't need it), I've upgraded my Dual 2.5GHz G5 to add some perceptible speed (launch apps, load documents, reduce swap, etc).

Recent changes:

•2 x 74GB Raptor 10K rpm hard drives, RAID 0 (139GB total) as boot & application disk.
•Two 2 x 160GB hard drives as (each a RAID 0) via FW800 as a data/document drive and daily incremental backup.
•300GB FW800 drive to serve as a backup device to my OS/Apps RAID and additional backup space.
•4GB RAM
•Added a Radeon 9200 PCI video card to drive third monitor; now running with 30" Cinema as main display, and a Dell 2001FP display on each side in portrait mode (90 rotation). Total resolution of 4960x1600
•New Apple wireless keyboard and Mighty Mouse.

I already had all the hard drives but a second Raptor, and had all the monitors (I had both Dells connected before I bought the 30" last year). Just bought 1GB of RAM, a SATA-to-Firewire drive case, a 128MB Radeon 9200 PCI card, and the Apple bluetooth Mighty Mouse and keyboard. About $500 total in upgrades, and the machine is plenty fast for me for now.

The three displays is actually kind of cool. I can keep my (busy) calendar open and visible at all times, use the main display for Keynote, Pages, Mail, Osirix and Word (and various pallets), and the third screen to display full-page PDF files (research articles, etc), websites, and other documents I may need to reference when working on Keynote, Word, etc., plus small things like the iTunes remote, CPU monitor, RAID monitor, etc. I'll post some pictures in a day or two (need to clean up after all the recent work).

I had a standard 533Mhz G4 Digital Audio that I upgraded to this :

dual 1.33Ghz G3 2mb cache per processor
1280mb pc133 memory
2 terabytes of harddisk
32mb videocard Gforce2 AGP + 16mb AtiRage 128 PCI
Duallayer DVD burner

Since the dualprocessor toasted itself the machine lost it's charm, it worked for a while again but I lost my confidence. I thought about buying a new Dualprocessor upgrade but calculated it wouldn't be economical. The machine is still under my desk, I have a 20" imac as a workhorse now.

Until last month I was using a 9600/G4/700/32MB video/1.4G ram/2 SCSI drives running 10.3.9 full time.

Bought a Digital Audio and upgraded to 1.5Ghz/ 1.25G ram/ 64MB video/2 SCSI drives/1 ATA

Use the DA for most daily activities but the 9600 is still my 'baby'.

I did. The first time it went as far as the smiling mac and just stuck there, Looks like a smirking one after looking at it for about 5 min. I then restart and from then on only bong but no v signal. I took the hd out and repair it with disk warrior using the FW. Still bong without v sig. I think the v card is fried. Or may be just bad v ram!

Digital Audio (grey) G4, originally 733mhz, upgraded to dual 1.8ghz G4s, 2 extra hard drives, 1.5gb ram, 16x dual layer dvd-+rw, dual monitors.
I got this in 2001 and am very surprised it has been so reliable and continues to be completely functional for me and everything I need to do, and will continue to do so (hand me down to my girlfriend soon though, new MacPro for me soon). Yay for Apple longetivity!

For those wondering, I'll be creating a 2007 edition of this soon. I'm waiting a bit longer to see if a new version of the Mac Pro is released at MacWorld.
