I saw that earlier. Long time in coming, and I wonder if they'll have any sort of celebration to try to gain some excitement, ala rolling stones for windows 95

In other news, Microsoft announced today that its new operating system, Windows Vista, will be delayed from its previously announced Jan. 30 release date.

I think they're now avoiding naming after dates so that if they can't get it out they don't look bad. But think if they'd called XP windows 2001... they'd be looking pretty bad right now.

I am excited for all the new viruses we will get to read about.
It is just so unlikely that everything will go according to plan for them.

to make te earlier release date possible they didn't include the features they promised. it will just be XP in a new coat. to be honest I don't give a rat's ass about this OS so I have no idea what features that would have been.

I really wonder how big their department of softwaredevelopment is. seems like a few guys with lots of money to spend on other company's technologies because implementing updates takes such an awful long time.

It is actually a total code re-write, not just XP in a new hat.

They have hundreds of developers working on it full time.

A total rewrite? I find that fairly hard to believe.

Out in Jan, so there'll be about 6 months before anyone bothers to upgrade.
Hurrah!

I'll be upgrading. I used the Beta a few times and it's very slick. I'm almost shocked to admit that I'm shocked that Microsoft actually came out with a good OS.

I'd be more shocked if it took so long and it wasn't a good OS.

Why? Then it would be just like every other release of Windows.

Its not a total code re-write but it was a major reworking.

I think part of the cause of it being so late was that they kept changing directions based on current market conditions. Look at security, I don't believe the enhanced security that vista provides was first on the drawing boards 5 years ago. Another reason was the over promising on features. Take WINFS as a prime example, while on paper its a great idea but it seems there were serious performance and technical issues associated with implementing it.

I wonder if this has any bearing on a rumor that Apple is planning on releasing Leopard earlier than anticipated (sorry I'm referring to a MacRumor rumor, nothing solid).

People will upgrade to the basic and hate it. People will have to pay a lot for any 'good' version of Vista, that or download it....

Note to self... when I buy a Macbook Pro.... start downloading... ummm... TV shows...

I thought I read that Virusus weren't suppose to be as much of a problem with Vista.

I don't care either way, since I won't be using it.
