I just watched this movie for the first time the other day. I can't believe I hadn't heard of it before.

From the makers of Rudy (my personal favorite sports movie), comes Hoosiers (released before Rudy). It centers around basketball in a small Indiana town. Basketball was the main theme through the movie, but was secondary to the small town dynamics on show. If you haven't lived in the mid west, this movie really captures a lot of the 'small town' vibe.

The movie was well made, and the performances by Hackman and Hopper were great. The soundtrack by Jerry Goldsmith is awesome too.

Cheers

It is a wonderful film.

I doubt that it could be made today, it would be seen as too religious and "preachy".

As with Rudy, fun/entertaining movies to watch. In reality, the stories they tell aren't all that close to the real life events.

If you are able to separate that (with any movie that is "based" on a true story) then you can enjoy them A couple other sports movies come to mind (Rookie, Invincible). They seem to be the worse at that, whole telling the story more accurately, part. Hahaha. But I still enjoy watching them.

Back when I was in high school, we discovered that my school's basketball coach had been on the Milan, IN team that inspired the movie Hoosiers. When we looked-up the stats for the Milan team, we also discovered that he was an all-but-permanent bench-warmer. He didn't play a single minute in the championship game, poor guy.

I had no idea basketball was this big in IN. I spent 5 years in MI, and the dominant sport was football. I assumed that it was the same throughout the midwest (what with ND football and all). When I first watched the movie, I thought they were making the sport more important than it was, but guess I was mistaken.

Hoosiers is probably my all-time favorite sports movie, but there are a few other basketball movies which are quite good: He Got Game with Denzel Washington and Ray Allen, and Hoop Dreams which is a documentary about two inner-city basketball stars and the different paths their lives take as they pursue basketball through high school and college. Hoop Dreams is really top notch.
