from outpost today

Unfortunately, the manufacturer was unable to meet their last estimated
shipping date. At this time we have not received a new estimated ship
date from the manufacturer. We are working to obtain a new estimated
shipping date; you may wish to check back within the next week or so. We
apologize for the continued delay.

OK, I got my 1 GB RAM module today (I live in Spain), once I place the module and start the PowerBook, ASP says no RAM on the reversed module, ouch!, same happens with another 512 MB module I have here, maybe the PowerBook motherboard has something bad or maybe I was that unlucky, two bad modules?

Say that the Hardware Test found a error on the reversed module:

*** ERROR CODE ***

If that is the case and there is a computer store that sells sodimm near you, run over and get a 512mb or 1gb and see if you get it the third time. 1 time is possible, 2 time you are very unlucky and 3rd time well then you know the computer is the problem.

As for the availablility of the 1gb of ram, called Outpost and there is 573 people on the waiting list for the ram. I decided not to place my order.
Powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz
80GB 5400RPM
2x256 PC2700 Sodimm
ATI 9700 128mb video card

I know a place that sells them for even less when they are out of stock. Unfortunately, the price always goes up when they are in stock.

I'd like to compile a little survey about kernel panics. How many (if any) have people had since installing the memory?

I've had two since installing one of the 1GB chips in my 1.33ghz 12" powerbook (in the span of a couple of weeks). One happened while I was away from the computer and nothing in particular was happening. The other happened when I was launching my DVD cataloging program.

I can't say for sure that the memory is the culprit, since this is a brand-new computer connected to a new monitor, etc. But I do know that with my old computer (867mhz 12" powerbook) kernel panics were very rare. They happened, but not often at all. I can only remember a handful in the entire time I owned the machine. Thus, having two in two weeks makes me a little nervous. Otherwise, it seems to be working fine.

ok guys, this deal is dead...so where is the next great powerbook ram deal?

I am finding some 100 dollar **** on ebay, but the question is does it work properly? Ebay is even less reliable than outpost.com (which wasnt reliable to begin with...).

they are still offering this, just waiting for a shipdate...so it may not be over.
if you cant find another deal, wait a bit...deal like this is worth it.

I agree. Unless you need this ram now, waiting for it costs you nothing. Hell, you could probably sell it for more on ebay if you wanted.

If only the bottom would drop out of the RAM market like it did in 2002. Remember 512MB for $45?

Woohoo - I got it for 149 *gloats.*

If there is a Fry's near you - why not just go there? If not - then that's were we have a problem.

Fry's didn't think that it would sell like hotcakes.

the apple prices are throwing money away.. the only difference is that apple puts the memory in into the machine for you.

if thats worth 300 bucks then go for it.

the memory i got had a 1 year or lifetime warrantee.. that's longer than you're gonna get on an apple warrantee w/o applecare.

Mine's still back-ordered - is anyone receiving shipment details or any other sort of notification?

Will cancel and get some from somewhere else if it looks like it's going to be too long a wait.

The price is still great although it now is $159.95. I would have to pay three times the price where I live. Great deal!

Got the 1GB stick today (my friend was slow in shipping the stick to Europe). The stick installed easy, without hiccups. The "About this computer" dialog box now shows 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM. I ran the machine for a while without closing the lid where the RAM is installed. The RAM did not get hot at all, so I find the increased fan some experience to be peculiar. I hope I won't experience it. I love having 1.25 GB RAM. Great deal.

I don't know about the 1G stick, but I just picked up a 512 the other day ago from there, and it seems to work great.

A little pricier, but ewiz.com has generic 1GB chips for $196.

Been running one in my 15" AL 'book for a week or so. So far, so good...

Nope, still not shipping (or at least mine haven't). I called them yesterday and they said that they've been expecting a shipment since the end of September. Apparently there's three hundred and something orders at the moment. The next shipment should cover that, though (according to the woman on the blower).

Looking forward to getting mine - 512 is a bit slow.

Mine's still backordered. 512MB is no fun. My old 12" (1GHz with 768MB) felt faster than this 1.5GHz machine, and my old 17" with 1GB felt faster than both of them.

Sniff, wuffle. Patience, patience.

Got an email today saying that the status of my order was being moved from back-ordered to "indefinite". Hmmm.

What other options are there for cheap RAM that works well in a 1.5GHz 15"?

I just called and they said that it's heavily backordered and that they don't have expected availability dates. So...what are the other inexpensive alternatives that are in stock?

What specifically should one look for? regulated? EEC? I know it is PC2700 but after that I'm not sure.

Apple sells 1GB Samsung memory.
The followings are some information of the memory.

Feature
U Power supply : Vdd: 2.5V 0.2V, Vddq: 2.5V 0.2V
U Double-data-rate architecture; two data transfers per clock cycle
U Bidirectional data strobe [DQ] (x4,x8) & [L(U)DQS] (x16)
U Differential clock inputs(CK and CK)
U DLL aligns DQ and DQS transition with CK transition U Programmable Read latency 2, 2.5 (clock)
U Programmable Burst length (2, 4, 8)
U Programmable Burst type (sequential & interleave)
U Edge aligned data output, center aligned data input
U Auto & Self refresh, 7.8us refresh interval(8K/64ms refresh)
U Serial presence detect with EEPROM
U PCB : Height 1250 (mil), single (256MB), double(512MB, 1GB) sided

operating frequency

Speed @CL2.5 166MHz
CL-tRCD-tRP 2.5-3-3

As far as I know, Samsung, Hynix, Elpida 1GB memories are compatible with the current aluminium powerbook. I have tested them with my 12inch 1.33GHz powerbook and 17 inch 1GHz powerbook, and all of them passed the hardware test. No problems with them at all.

Many online store sell Samsung memory which is expensive. In contrast, you may not find Hynix or Elpida memories at online stores. They are very rare on the market. But some sampling products leak out from the main labtop manufacturers like Dell, IBM and HP.

I don't know other brand like Micron and Infineon. Their memories may be compatible with the current powerbook. IBM and HP sell 1GB Samsung and Micron memories for thier notebook with DDR 333 MHz speed. Also there are several cheap memories made by Taiwan on the market.

thanks for the specs!! I appreciate it.

http://www.shopgenie.com/COM_listing...000050904.html

check these prices out!! Is this what we are looking for? I compared the specs of those to the spec sheets, and they seem to be the same thing. It is PC2700 333mhz DDR ram, totally generic.

http://www.pcnextday.co.uk/product_d...ef_site=kelkoo

this one looked especially reputable...

what do you all think?

For those that are curious, I posted notes on loading up an AlBook with 2 GB of RAM from NewEgg.

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=234350

So far the results look great, and I can see no difference between this and the stock Apple RAM, regardless of the touting of "low-power" and "super-better-RAM".

Could be worse, check the mail I got:

"Your order is beyond our 30 day return policy and therefore Outpost.com
cannot accept a return on this item. The manufacturers warranty may
still apply; we recommend you contact them for assistance. Contact
information should be contained in the product packaging and/or manual.
If you need assistance finding contact information, please let us know."

So I am here f****d with one useless 1 GB RAM module

Ah well, my PB is still doing quite well on 512M so I can wait a little longer.
