Vizio: Legit or not?

What is the catch? Why are Vizio TVs so cheap? On most websites I've looked they get great ratings yet they are the cheapest LCD/Plasma TVs on the market. I've been wanting to get a 42 inch tv for a while and I found a Vizio 42 inch Plasma for 899.99 at Circuit City. Is 10,000:1 Contrast ratio good? What do I need to look for?

You'd be surprised. Plasmas are pretty cheap. If you look at 42" Plasmas from all the big vendors, you'll see they're all around $1000.00.
10,000:1 is about average for Plasmas. Someone else would know better what to look for specifically. I'm an LCD guy so I've attuned myself to all the possible pitfalls on an LCD.

the other day buy.com was selling a 37" vizio hdtv for $500...im not into watching tv, but even i know thats a steal.

Vizio certainly seems to be legit. Compared to others in the same price point, they blow everyone else away. Do they compete with sony, Samsung, Pioneer and others like that? Not really. They are pretty much top of the bottom of the line.
I recently debated getting the 37" Vizio, but ended up with a Sony 37" for a couple hundred more. The picture was slightly better, it had more inputs, and had a better looking case than the Vizio. Worth $200 more? To me, yes.

Whenever you're looking at a cheap plasma TV, make sure the native resolution is more than 1024x768. That's the older (cheaper) technology. Most modern plasmas can do full 720p HD.

That's the one catch I've heard with the Vizios. They play with the resolution and sometimes and don't actually ship a panel that is 720p or 1080p. I think the TV linked to by the OP is 1024x768.

To add to your post: 720p is a resolution of 1280x720.

I purchased a 47" Vizio LCD about six months ago and still love it!
Especially watching the high-def channels.

Compare a Vizio side-by-side with the same size Philips, Samsung, Sony, Sharp, etc. and you will see why they are cheaper. You get what you pay for...

This is so true. I was all on the Vizio bandwagon at first because they are inexpensive and get good reviews. However, when I saw its picture next to a Samsung it was no contest. Now don't get me wrong .... the Vizio had a pretty good picture. Feed it an HD signal and look at it by itself and it is way better than SDTV. However, when I saw how it displayed the same HD signal as the Samsung the latter was noticeably brighter and sharper. The Vizio was kinda "meh" whereas the Samsung picture just "popped off the screen".
So the bottom line is if the added picture quality is worth the extra bucks to you?

I have a nice Samsung LCD and my brother has a 32" Vizio. I've never been able to do a side by side, but from transitioning from his TV to mine it is hard to see $600 of a difference.
Of course I'm sure a lot of people can tell the difference and I'm sure I could too if I looked hard enough. He has his xbox 360 hooked up to it 1080i and it looks amazing. I almost wish I'd have saved $600 and gone with the vizio.
Watch out if you're buying the 32" model. The all black version sold at wal-mart has lower specs than the silver one sold at sam's and costco.

My parents bought the 50" Vizio for about $2k last year: it's 720p (1366x768ish) and it looks good.
