I have a old copper pot/tub, which would be perfect for storing items in my house. The only problem is that the tub is really, really dirty. It has oxidized/rust in some spots, and is covered in an oily film. I would like to polish it up to a shiny luster and let it develop its own patina.

Anyone know the best way to clean a large copper pot?

I'd suggest searching google for "cleaning copper."

I've already done that - that's an internet 101 solution. Unfortunately, none of the ideas have worked. Thus, I'm posting here for more advice.

Lemon juice, salt and a little "elbow grease". Give it a try.

Lemon juice and salt will make the copper shiny bright-for about half an hour. After that it will tarnish from contact with air. Use something like "Brasso" or "Flitz" to clean it up-they both leave a coating that keeps the metal from tarnishing-at least from tarnishing very quickly.

I have a metal working customer who uses GALLONS of "Real Lemon" lemon juice to clean his copper. I can't speak to Glenn's assertion that it will tarnish immediately, my customer machines pieces of copper, cleans them in lemon juice, dries them thorougly, and ships them. If they tarnished right away, I think his customers would have let him know. It may depend on the quality of the copper too though, so as they say, your mileage may vary. Make sure they're DRIED when you're done.

Good luck,
Tom

i think the people who make "bartender's friend" for stainless steel also make a product for copper.

and here is a site for penny collectors who like to make them shinny (yes, i know...pennies aren't 100% copper anymore)

PennyCollector.com - The official website for elongated pennies, penny books and penny machines
