we have a friend who is dying. she wants to spend time online, exploring, chatting, email.
we hooked up a 6400/180 for her so she can spend time online (with a dsl connection...ironically, the fast connection seems to balance out the slow computer speed)
we need a printer for her; one was donated, but the plugs don't fit anywhere in the powermac.
any ideas about what we need, in terms of printer plugs, waht kind of plug is needed?
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

the plug that came with the printer (an old hp i think) is a ribbon cable. one end fits the printer, the other has no where to go on the 6400.
there's a db25 connector on the powermac...
is that for the printer?
or??
thanks!

sigh, that's a SCSI-1 connector, not a DB25 connector.
What HP model is it, that would make things easier. Just look for a port that's small and round (looks like ps2) that both the mac and the printer have. That's your mac printer cable.

hmmm...
according to the specs (found at apple-history.com) there are 2 serial ports and one scsi (db-25) port.
which is for the printer?
i'm not able to get there for a few days, but the printer had a ribbon cable with big rectangle plugs, only one fit the printer, the other end was too big for the serial ports on the 6400...

The serial ports are for the printer. If the printer only has a parallel port (the one that looks like SCSI), you might look into PowerPrint. It's a parallel to serial adapter. I just checked the suggestion price, and you could buy a new printer for less (it's $99.)
edit: fixed my spelling errors

The best thing to do is get a USB PCI card and install it into the Mac, make sure you are running MacOS 8.6 or even better 9, install the "Apple USB Card Support" driver from the Apple Site. This will then let you use any USB printer. Put the printer you have on ebay.
If you go down this route at least you will have a printer that will work with any new Mac if you upgrade the Mac later.
Hope that helps

It is obvious that the printer was meant for PC's with parallel ports. You will have to purchase a PowerPrint product, get a PCI card with USB and a USB printer, or find a used Mac supported printer with a classic 8-pin serial connector on it.
