Hi everyone, I feel that I need an external backup for my Mac Pro, and so it would make sense to get a FW800 external HD, and the only company making a decent option that is easily available in the UK is Western Digital - the My Book Pro 500Gb. But, is it any good? There's no point in my backup going down!

Thanks,

David

I have just asked the same thing, but I was looking at the 1TB because you can mirror RAID it. I do have the cheaper USB only drive just as temp storage and that works fine.

Only place I have found them is Amazon, have you spotted them any where else?

I'd check places like eBuyer, scan.co.uk and dabs.com - I'm sure I've seen it at least one of them, maybe even all three.

Is there any benefit with going to the model that supports Firewire 800 ?
Can the drive inside keep up?

Yes it will still go faster than 400 but maybe not reach the limit of 800, if you stripe the drives inside it will be very fast, mirror them and the speed will half.

Used 800 drives before, even in a single drive config and it's still faster than 400

The extra is worth it,

FWIW I've heard the 1TB WD MyBooks are really, really noisy.

Put me off enough that I've got a 500GB MyBook Pro on the way. Will report back on how it is when it arrives.

That's actually really good - I can't actually find the item on Amazon UK - do you have a link? Did you have to get them to price match, because their price on the 500Gb pro is very uncompetitive?

Thanks,

David

Mine should be with me today, on the Amazon site search for "my book" and you should see all the range.

Mine arrived and it work very well, I have it set as a mirror, the fan does kick in when it gets warm and yes it is loud but after 20 mins or so (depends on how you use it) it does turn off.

But today Amazon mailed me to say WD have a firmware update to change the way the fan work... but it's a PC firmware and no Mac version. I have tried to mail WD but their registratin process dont work and I have no way to log a tech support email.

If anyone has the email address for WD that would be cool, I need to ask them if they will do a Mac firmware updater.

Thanks for the feedback. I ended up getting the 500gig Mybook Pro, and it's working great, but I'll have to put it on something soft, as it does vibrate a good bit.

David.
