Our cat has scratched our toddler a bunch of times... and he's deserved it. That's a life lesson as far as I'm concerned.

The cat is actually fantastic with the kid, it's the kid who insists on repeatedly slam sitting on him, pulling on his head, etc... Even then, the scratches only come from rough playing more than anything. I mean, that's how a cat plays. By biting and playfully scratching you. If you you tackle a cat, expect some claws coming back your way.

Our other cat just runs away.

hah hah

chihuahuas aren't pets, they're pit bulls

hah hah

well behaved animals can be a plus with newborns (experience with dogs cats and 5 kids). Problem is most people spoil their pets rather than train them - oh maybe that's the parenting problem too. ;^)

When I was wee little baby, my mother's dog would lay under the crib and growl at anyone that walked to close. She said it got to be quite a chore to change, bathe or feed me, as it involved tricking the dog first. She said every time someone would walk into the room, you'd see her snout, lips curled back and teeth exposed, poke out from under the crib. Good doggy!

That's because dog's don't like it when you take their food away.

Dog loves me but is hideously unpredictable. I wouldn't let a Chihuahua near a small child, EVER.

Thanks for all this, but I think you're all getting a bit off topic...

We'll deal with the pet situation if we ever have a baby. I'm not concerned about that.

Well, on topic, I think we've gone as far as we can go. I think Oreo nailed it best and it's on you now to get to the bottom of things (assuming you do not fear the possible effect).

You need to have an open line of communication with your wife. If you can't do that then there are deeper problems.

Just sit down and tell her how you feel. Make her understand how serious you are about it.

Heehee.

Yeah, she knows how serious I am about it. I'm going to keep dropping hints and talking about it (as an adult) when it comes up, which it does (since everybody, and I mean everybody, asks us when we are going to have kids).

I'll keep you posted. Thank you all so much for your advice!

Why would I come back to my old thread from earlier this year? Guess...

Yes, my wife is pregnant, 15 weeks now! She's due on 10/30. We're secretly hoping baby will come on Halloween.

We had a good long talk about what we both want. We were able to agree that we had come to a point in our relationship where she could trust me and I promised to always be there for her and the baby. And just like that, it just happened! A lot sooner than we expected since we had read it could take a year to get pregnant.

She didn't have a great 1st trimester (who does?), but she's starting to feel better and she seems excited about having the baby as well. I'm thrilled. I even got her a 1st mother's day card for this weekend.

Thank you everybody for your advice. I think it really helped.

Excellent news, Steve. Pregnancy is a woman's time to shine, and it seem to suit some women very well; my wife fairly glowed the whole time. She did have morning sickness for the first trimester, and it was fatiguing for her to work in the last three months (which may have had to do with it being spring and summer in Austin), but she was more beautiful then than she had been before. And a good bit of that stuck, I must add.

Enjoy the time with her, and take lots of pictures; you'll need to get into the habit of having a camera handy for when the baby comes anyway.

And enjoy the time. My little boy is nearly a year old, it's breathtaking how fast they change.

Congrats! Enjoy the ride!

(I'll butt-in here and advise, as a father of two, to avoid knowing the sex of the baby until it's born. That's the biggest gift you can experience together. I'm serious. My wife and I are both very glad we went that route.)

Congratulations! We waited too long and now adoption is our only option. There is never a "perfect time" to have a baby. There will always be bills and all the other worries of the world. Happy (expectant) Mother's Day to the Mrs as well!

Congrats, steve. It sounds like you made a great decision.

I wonder how MacNN babies will feel when they come on the forums years from now and see their parent talking about the prospects of getting married and having children. Not that it would be a bad thing in any respect, but it will be different for the next generations growing up, knowing often that there are Internet trails from their parents that predate their existences.

Congratulations!!! (I posted a diatribe then realized this was an old thread back from the dead so never mind my lecture.)

And as for those kids looking back at the old forum posts, my 12 year old is now posting on the forums. I have passed on a valuable family tradition. Although I think he's a lot ruder than I am. :/ And a bad speller.

Congrats! Some advice:
- wait to find out the sex of the baby if you can. It's more exciting that way, and you get to find out before mom.
- the closer to birth, adjust to an early morning wakeup schedule if you haven't already.
- any "toys" you want for yourself, buy them now. Not that you may not be able to afford them, you'll never get the time to use them.

Thanks for the congrats, everybody!

As for waiting on knowing the sex, that's simply not going to happen. My wife *hates* surprises. This includes, but is not limited to: packages in the mail (even if they are not addressed to her), gifts, surprise parties, and baby's sex! We're going to know as soon as we can.

I've never understood waiting. You get surprised either way. The birth will already be a completely emotionally overwhelming moment... no need to make it more "enjoyable" then it already will be.

Besides, finding out the sex will allow you to stock up on toy guns or ballerina outfits months in advance.
