Thoughts on the new layout?

Personally, I think it's terrible in terms of being able to find interesting articles I wouldn't have otherwise clicked on. It also seems very heavily focused on advertising. Luckily, http://gizmodo.com/#!classic

Looks like a uninspired knock-off of AOL's Project Devil.

I have no idea what project devil looks like, but when you're being compared to AOL, I feel certain you dun goofed.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I have removed flash from my MBA for performance sake (still have chrome's built in support if I really need it) and the site does not seem to work correctly. Even the "classic" layout sucks. Unless it gets better, they've lost a reader. Sad- I enjoyed buzzing by their site.

They "nerfed" the classic early yesterday morning. After that even it wasn't loading for me half the time.

Whatever, less time on their sites isn't exactly a bad thing.

What MBA do you have that you can't use flash?

I get the impression one of the ways Gawker saves money is by not considering their IT department a high priority. Remember their shamefully weak security was busted not too long ago.

This reeks of that. I imagine their IT department begging for a staggered rollout.

Jalopnik has had this layout for a few weeks. It seems to me that it was built for a touch device.

I can't see the website because there's a giant flash ad in front of it.

Ahh. I got the impression they just spammed their whole network with it.

Did you happen to note if it rankled the user base there?

Thank the Lord for RSS feeds. Whoever decided on the new design needs to have his/her head examined.

I stopped reading jizzmodo after the iphone theft.

New design is really awful. I'll keep not reading.

I did used to like how Giz is less uptight than Engadget, and Sizemodo is pretty brilliant, but I think the Engadget team is just better.

Patel specifically has no counterpart on Giz (or at least didn't when I stopped reading).

Admittedly, their podcast is part of this. Because of it, I feel like I know the Engadget team much better than the Giz team.

Damn !!! I didn't get a chance to look at Giz yesterday (I do work occasionally). It really is a clusterfook isn't it. Glad to see that I'm not the only one that considers it a giant step backwards.

Maybe time for another 'What tech-news websites do you visit' thread.

I gave up on Gizmodo a while back, after the iPhone fiasco, but I do read IO9 daily. If it's the same layout they are now using, both being gawker sites, it sucks and I hate it. I hate it with all my little black heart.

According to one article I read some of their sites saw a drop-off in traffic as steep at 33%. It's worth noting they're refusing to commit to the full-page article design on Gawker, compared to say, kotaku.

It doesn't work on iPads

My iPad now redirects to the "mobile version".

Which makes the redesign hilariously redundant.

2nd Gen 1.86GHz Core2Duo with 128SSD. And, for the most part, it's a dog. When I run safari in flash, it really slows things down. There seems to be a bit of a bug in these things that when the temp goes up too high, fans come on full blast and performance dies until you put it to sleep and wake it back up.

I CAN run flash, but it makes for a worse experience. So i do without or launch chrome when I need it. Just makes things a bit better.

I am still getting the "new and improved" layout. The site is unnavigable with my Magic Mouse and Safari.

Scrolling is unpredictable and clicking on the "Next Post" tab at the bottom of the screen takes me to different sites on the Gawker network. Clicking back to the Gizmodo site takes me back to the beginning of the site.

Here's an analysis of the code behind Gawker's remake of their sites.

How much RAM? I've got the 1.6GHz 11" w/ 4GB of RAM and have no problem running flash in Safari. Hell, I've even played Starcraft 2 on this thing.

My favorite part is since they pussed out and are running the classic view in the main frame they've made the right column completely redundant.

The current generation is completely different hardware, and most notably does not have the issue he explicitly described, where under load, the processor heats up and one core is shut down to reduce heat.

In other words, processor power is halved precisely when you're needing it most.

Hopefully I can explain this.

I have a bookmark for blog.gizmodo.com - it goes to Gizmodo
I type in Gizmodo, the Gadget Guide - it goes to Gizmodo
While at Gizmodo I click on the UK or US site, it goes back to Gizmodo
While at Gizmodo I click on the AU (Oz) site, it resolves it.

What the fook? How, without using a proxy, can I ensure than I can read Gizmodo from a computer in France? I've mailed (several times) the French and US sites with no reply.

Well when I'm waiting for Oracle to install and I've covered all the other tech sites that actually allow people to read articles, I actually wanted to see what Gizmodo had written.

Shame on me I know.
