I've always wondered if it were possible to turn off the filename abbreviation OS X does in the Finder. For example, a file name could be "One Kind Of Long File Name.rtf" but in the finder, the filename is shown as "One Kind...Name.rtf".

Is it possible to force the finder to display the entire filename without the abbreviation?

You can't do it in icon view, but you can see the entire filename is list of column view.

Thanks for the reply Chris.

It's unfortunate, but perhaps Leopard will take care of this with its grid sizing option.

You're right. Perhaps the grid sizing option in Leopard will let more of the filename be visible. Good point.

srfdriver22, are you seeing only one text line below icons, or two? Finder can do two, which helps somewhat. Use Onyx or TinkerTool to change it, it's a hidden feature.

I DO NOT recommend TinkerTool in OS X 10.4.8. Caused my system to kernel panic.

What specific function of TinkerTool caused your system to panic? Most of its functions shouldn't be capable of causing such a thing.

^^^After I installed it and played around with it I let my system sleep wile I listened to my iPod. I noticed that the Apple logo on the screen was glowing and that the fans were going at full speed. I've deinstalled it and I'm fine so far.

That sounds like a coincidence. All TinkerTool does is mess with .plist files - it shouldn't be able to cause anything like that.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

This is what I see:

It's not that there are one or two lines. When I set the text to the bottom of the icon instead of the right (as shown in the picture), it abbreviates the filename or folder on two lines.

I found something that helps a little.

Hold the option key and move your cursor over the filename and the tooltip will popup immediately.
