Microsoft is airing a new TV ad for Windows 8 tablets targeting their main competition, the Apple iPad. The spot points out that the iPad is missing equivalents to Windows 8 features like Live Tiles and true multitasking, and that at $449, a 64GB ASUS VivoTab Smart tablet is far cheaper than a comparable 64GB iPad, which is $699. Narrating everything is a Siri-like voice trying to defend Apple.

Microsoft is still fighting to gain marketshare in the tablet world. While the iPad has seen some of its share slip in the past year, most of that shift is believed to be favoring Android-based tablets like the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire. Microsoft's own Surface tablets have seen relatively marginal sales so far.

What it doesn't say is 64MB on the Asus is really 32 GB and Keynote works just fine. Is Asus rally selling that with Win 8 for $449. Gross Margin must be small.

Apple is doomed as usual. It's always said Apple products never have the right features, the right price or anything else. People only buy Apple products because of the logo. However, I really thought most of Microsoft's Windows partners were complaining that Windows 8 really wasn't what consumers were looking for and they blamed Microsoft for poor hardware sales because the Windows 8 introduction didn't help boost sales as expected. I've never heard any surveys indicating that consumers were looking for tablets that could multitask.

Haha, they're really stretching if they think these are great must-have features. The animated home screen is quite distracting and was panned by reviewers. The only real feature the Surface has is Office, and there's dozens of Office clones in the App Store.

i went to the microsoft store and looked at this thing and i mean thing ! it weighs a ton its thick as a brick it actually has a sharp corner in the back where the goofy leg comes out it s as ugly as a camel the screen is small and the i pad updates just not over wi fi have you ever had a smooth windows update in your life?
this device is the embodiment of the saying "a camel is a horse built by committee" it has no style and a commercial like this smacks of desperation .no consumer who actually lifts this thing into their hands will choose it over an I-pad Microsoft remains a 32 bit patch over a 16 bit shell 0n an 8 bit program on 4bit code from a 2 bit company who hates 1 bit of competition

No human can actually multitask. You can only concentrate on/interact with one program at a time anyway.

The iPad does have multi-tasking in the form of background processing which is all that it really needs.

I can see the battery drains out big time with multitask turning on. Another thing is people don't care that much about running Office on a tablet because real jobs are usually done on laptop/desktop. Tablet is good for quick access, quick fix, and fun factor.

It's really pathetic to see Microsoft once again try to justify the merits of continuing to centralize consumer products solely around Windows. It just smacks of a complete lack of innovation in Redmond and is the equivalent of the age-old method of "furniture moving" to make something seem new.

What the iPad doesn't have is an ugly, garish, unintuitive user interface bundled into a package totally lacking in style and priced ridiculously.

let's see, they've never made a profit on their online services - hotmail, search (whatever it's called these days), etc. - ever. in the last 10 years they've lost over 8 billion on it.
xbox lost enough money before it's first profitable quarter ms could have built their very own international space station.

ballmer said ms will throw up to 10 billion (yep, billion) at bing to "compete" with google.

nobody, but nobody, plays moneyball like microsoft.

Stupid. Keynote, Pages, Numbers is all you need. Skip that bloated piece of junk Office for a Tablet.
