I have heard alot of people on this board saying that the processor in the Powerbook G4 is not upgradeable. This is simply untrue.

While the processor itself can't be removed (it is soldered in)-- according to a freind of mine who worls for an upgrade chip maker (won't give the name, but it rhymes with Bonnett) says that they believe it will be possible to upgrade a Powerbook G4 to a DUAL PROCESSOR CONFIG. within 12 months and that it is something they are currently working on!

I hope he isn't pulling my chain-- but surely battery life would be sliced in 1/2 by such a thing-- but it is fun to dream about.

I guess this would be a good enough reason as any (though impossible) to bring back the expansion bay for the second battery as mentioned in the other thread (sorry too lazy to look for it).

I don't care about dual processors. Most apps can't take full advantage of that anyway. Under OS X, there'll be some increase for all apps, but only multithreaded apps will see the nearly 100% speedup a second processor can give.

I'd rather have an 800MHz SOI Apollo in my PB that everything can benefit from. But Motorola will fight to keep the Altivec design proprietary until it finally kills the PowerPC and maybe Apple with it.

Either newportnews is pulling our chains, or his friend confused PowerBOOK with PowerMAC. They are probably working on dual-CPUs for the PowerMACs.

I'll believe it when I see it.
