I just bought a Quicksilver 800 PowerMac running 9.2 and OSX. I hooked up my old SCSI HD running 8.6 and it mounts fine in 9.2, but the machine won't boot from the SCSI 8.6 drive-- when I switch to it in the Startup Disk control panel and reboot, I get a blinking question mark folder for about 10 seconds, then the system boots the 9.2 disk instead. Any suggestions on how to boot the 8.6 SCSI drive?

thanks!

What SCSI card are you using? Your SCSI card might not have the "bootable" feature" which allow you to boot from the SCSI device ...

I doubt you can boot from anything below 9.0 (maybe even 9.2!) on that machine.

The problem he is having is more likely to be hardware problem instead of software problem ...

Quite seriously, A Quicksilver is NOT going to boot system 8.2. All the documentation on those states that 9.2 is required. I don't think they'll even boot 9.1. My G4 450 AGP requires at least 9.0, and it's 2 years old, now.

Different architecture throughout from the machines they were making when 8.2 was new.

I'm sure if you install 9.2 on that drive, it'll boot fine.

No, it's true that macs will only boot on the system they came with + upwards. My snow iMac (the DVD one) won't boot on anything below 9.0

I'm going to take a different approach and believe the your reference to 8.6 is the size of the drive (formatted capacity of a 9gig drive) and NOT the OS. It is possible that although your card is Mac compatible, it may not work on the QS800. For instance, I have an Siig AP-40 SCSI Pro card (Ultra-Wide, 40MB/s) that will not work with a 733 or faster Quicksilver. http://www.siig.com/knowledge/10050836.HTM

Check with your SCSI card manufacturer first.

Sorry ... I forgotten there is a minimum system software for every Mac Model ...
