On startup, I get the Google homepage.
But... if I close the window, command W, and then open, I get the 8 thumbnails.
I hate those thumbnails, anyway to just get the homepage again. thanks!

Check your preferences for new window behavior.

In the Preferences pane, choose "Basics". About half way down it says "Home Page" and gives two options. The "New page tab" is selected. Change it to the other choice and put your favorite page in there.

Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog
very long. Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

I get what you're saying jeff, I've noticed the same issue. When you first launch Chrome, it opens your Home page. But when you open a new window/new tab(without having quit the program), it opens the Top Sites-type view, right? Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to change this. But if anyone does know, I'l love to hear it.

While you can't disable the Top Sites page completely, you can remove most of the stuff from the page so you end with an almost blank page when you open a new tab.
Launch Chrome and open a new tab after the app launches and on the top right is 3 icons, one of which a drop down menu where you can uncheck 'Most Visited,' 'Recently closed,' and 'Tips.'
But no, currently there is no way to turn this feature off completely and have a new tab open with your designated home page.

Q, you lost me- except you are verifying Chrome forces a cluttered space?

He's talking about the default web content on the new tab. When you create a new tab and see the Top sites, there's 3 little icons on the top right of the web page. Click the right-most one.

As I said, not the control buttons above, but actually on the web page. See attachment, upper right.

I'm not sure how many times I have to say it. In the screenshot I attached, there are 3 little icons in the upper right hand corner. As -Q- said, click the rightmost one (the little down arrow) and uncheck the items he mentioned.

Almost a blank page is the same as what I have now! It's still a cluttered mess, and a click away from a normal homepage you get with any other browser.
