so anytime i right click on my desktop to change the desktop background i get a 2-3 second pause followed by the rainbow wheel of death. this is something i cant even start to troubleshoot, cause its so obscure of a issue. the only thing ive tried is i have restarted and tried with no applications open, but still nothing.

Can you reach this function via the System Preferences route?

System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver -> Desktop tab

Do you mean immediately after invoking the menu, or after having selected 'Change Desktop Background'?
