It can be done!
(quite well too)
I just discovered a plug-in for QuickTime Pro - it costs $10 but I think it is worth it. It plays all WMV files natively in the QuickTime Player.

um sorry if this has been posted before, I just thought this was really really neat. It is fast and works in QT 7 (and in OS X 10.4) as well.
