Check Apple's "creative professionals" Panther feature list and scroll down a bit. Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?
Now I don't know if that means that Apple will ever advertise their Superdrives as being able to do this, but it looks as though we might finally be able to use the Finder and Apple's own programs to burn rewritable DVDs. No more having to use Toast or something like that just to get the functionality.

i noticed something else: it lists the DVD+R, and DVD+RW formats as being supported. i didn't see this mentioned anywhere else, but it sure seems resonable given the +/- drives that they have begun shipping.
excellent.
