So, the cast members have been announced. I didn't know who Bérénice Marlohe was so I did a GIS. Not bad. I recognized the name Naomi Harris, but couldn't remember what she'd been in, so another GIS.
WARNING : with Safe Search OFF you will have some ... interesting photos presented.
Anyhooooo, I liked the last 2 Daniel Craig bond films, much more gritty than the Brosnan ones.

I enjoyed Casino but fell asleep half way through QoS and never bothered with the end.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Thought Casino Royale was the best Bond film since forever; found Quantum of Solace to be absolutely mediocre. Hopefully they get things back on track.

Same here. I really liked Casino Royale, but thought Quantum of Solace was absolutely horrible.

The important thing is not the actors, but what the product placements will be. In other words, what will the Bond car be? Who will be singing the opening credits song? What brand of beverage will Bond be imbibing? What branding will his fancy cell phone/other electronic gizmo have? We want to know.

I'm betting the Range Rover Evoque will have a major role.

They trashed a couple Astons for the last one, and it turns out they paid for ALL of them. Aston doesn't do endorsements.

Traditionally, Sony.
Are they still around?
(and Rolex, of course)

QoS is nearly universally reviled. And I agree with Shortcut-I think Casino Royale is arguably the best of the franchise.

If it is anything other than the Aston Martin One-77 then it'll be an EPIC FAIL.

The important thing is not really the actor, it's the director. IMO, there have been two good Bond movies since...forever: Goldeneye and Casino Royale. Those two happen to have the same director. He clearly knows what he's doing with Bond. I have high hopes for Sam Mendes - if Eon or whoever is calling the shots these days lets him do his thing.

Emphasis on "with Bond", hahaha...I would say that Casino Royale is the only truly feels-real-and-gritty film Martin Campbell has ever done. Goldeneye was a solid Bond movie, but still suffers from feeling too polished, posh and popcorny for the most part - just like almost all of his other movies. He's put out some real mediocre efforts and some real stinkers.
In any case, I totally agree with you on a fundamental level. The director is who generally makes any film. And Sam Mendes is an absolutely weird, but totally awesome, choice to direct a Bond film - considering he's never made an action movie (unless you consider Jarhead to be one, which it wasn't, or Road to Perdition, which semi-was-but-not-really). But he's made some fantastic flicks (Road to Perdition being the best, IMO).
I'm going to get really excited about this movie. Must...temper...expectations....

Goldeneye had its merits but it was a bit corny.

The point is, I think, that Goldeneye had no real weaknesses. The cast was good, but more importantly noone fell down on the job. The plot was nothing special, but there weren't any big holes. That let you focus on the sequences that worked (like the opening) without being annoyed with something failing.
I have no real opinion of Campbell outside the Bond franchise - according to his IMDB page, he has directed some movies I have seen, but I can't say I remember them especially - but it doesn't really matter. He has directed the only two good Bond movies in the modern era - that's earned him another chance. Will be really interesting to see what Mendes plans to do, though.

The fact that Goldeneye didn't suck is true, but not an endorsement.
There are so many films I have no reason or urge to ever watch again, already. Not sucking isn't enough.

Yes - and Casino Royale isn't one of them. Last couple times I've picked out a movie I've thought about watching it, actually.
Haven't seen Goldeneye in many years now and would be interesting to see how it's aged....

I don't mean literally forever, but all other Bond movies from the eighties and on are somewhere between just bad and absolutely unwatchable.

It stopped being awesome when I hit around 16 or so.
Of the Roger Moore Bonds, I think the only one I would gladly watch again now is "View to a Kill".
Edit: Well, okay, and "The Spy Who Loved Me"

Yeah, that film has the honor of employing two of the creepier people ever, GraceJones and Christopher Walken (Blonde, no less).
