what does it mean when I get a split in half .sit
file? I can't open it for some reason.

This looks like a segmented file - Stuffit (and other utilities) can divide an archive into more than one file. You may have gotten one file, but not the other(s) that would complete the archive. I've never really done anything with segmented files, though, so I wouldn't know exactly what to do with it (if anything).

Delete the file, get the .bin of it or .hqx of it and decompress it again.
Chances are it will be fine.
That is normally the case - sometimes it means it is segmented, but usually not.
Its just corrupted, I think.

Actually, Stuffit 6 seems to stamp that icon onto most everything it decompresses. For example, I downloaded an SMI the other day, expanded to the ripped icon, but still mounted just fine.
Nothing to worry about.
