Well, long story short...I bought a nice 2006 Honda Accord EX about 6 months ago...and ended up totaling it about a week ago (I was completely unharmed and no one else was involved, thank goodness). Sooooo I was forced into getting a new car.

2008 Toyota Camry XLE, 2.4L 4cyl, 32k miles.

So far I really like it a lot! I've always wanted a black car (its going to be a pain in the ass to keep clean, I know, and I don't care). It is a really smooth ride, much less road noise than my Accord, gas mileage has been great so far, interior is roomy and comfy (though I'm not in love with the center console and wood grain accents), and I've always liked the body styling of this generation Camry. So yeah, so far so good!

So... how did you wreck the Honda?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

I'd like to know how the Civic met its end. In particular, how it was "totaled," since our CRV was totaled though still completely drivable. My son was 3rd from the light when a truck driven by a drunk plowed into the car behind my son...Only the CRV and the first car at the light were still drivable after that, and thankfully nobody was hurt (the drunk was too floppy to get hurt and everyone else had seatbelts on. The CRV's airbags did not deploy, but the body did its job and absorbed a LOT of energy - the spare tire well under the cargo area was literally ripped open by the impact, though the vehicle still drove straight and smooth. So "totaled" does not mean "rendered into tiny bits," particularly with modern Hondas. I just wan to find out what the Civic had to put up with to be rendered "not economically repairable."

Haha, I saw this video last night...pretty sick!

Well, without going into too much detail, I'll just say that I was going around a corner too fast, hit some gravel, over corrected, ended up hitting a curb, and ultimately rolled it. It wasn't the most devestating looking wreck by looking at the car afterwards, but it was definitely banged up pretty good and the engine was locked. Actually I was very happy and surprised about how well the cabin held up...the structural integrity of those things must be top notch. I rolled it and the cabin didn't really appear too "compressed" at all...the pillars all held up really well. The steering wheel airbag never deployed but the side curtain airbag did. Also the driver's side wheel was pretty much knocked right off. By NO means was the car in any way driveable after this. :S

I bought it for $14,995 six months ago and the insurance company is going to give me $15,250 for it. Buuuut my insurance is also going to get a nice hike as well. :/ Oh well, the main part is that I made it out completely unharmed and no one else was involved.

But besides all that I'm really enjoying the new Camry!

The Camry is definitely growing on me more and more each day. I think a big part of that is because I got the XLE "top of the line" model. The XLE has an updated gauge cluster (the gauges on the SE and LE are hideous IMO but I reeeeally like the look and layout of the XLE gauges) and the upgraded 8 speaker JBL sound system sounds GREAT for a stock system! I used to hate how the head unit/cetner console looked but that's actually starting to grow on me a bit too. Getting 30 MPG with 80/20 city/hwy driving is also pretty sweet.

Same here. Odd design choice. And the brake pedal feel, which is similar to stepping on a rotten banana.

Nissan always seems to have the touchiest brakes, though anything feels good compared to my own car.

I'll be honest, the center console was a big turn off for me too. Surprisingly it has grown on me a little bit. I definitely preferred the look of the Accord center console over the Camry, but it hasn't been as irritating as I thought it would be. Same with the wood grain accents. I'd prefer brushed aluminum or something along those lines, but the dark wood grain has grown on me a little bit.

Who cares about how good it was in 'competitive driving?' Arguing about which shitty small FWD car drives around a track best is pointless. The Neon never was, or is, a good car for everyday driving, which is what it was intended for. Build quality is terrible, the interior is garbage, and the exterior is salty garbage.

Whereas a new Toyota might just be as milquetoast as they come, it is a fantastic car for...wait for it....being a goddamn car. Nobody takes into account how well a cheap street car performs at the track when they are buying a new ride, well, except you apparently.

Yeah, something being fun to drive is totally irrelevant. I so wish my cars were the epitomy of a boring appliance on wheels. That would be rad.

For those that view cars as a utility rather than a pleasure, it's not a wish that they are boring, but it is fairly low as a priority that they are fun (I.e., they view it like a toaster).

God, it's really taking some restraint not to start tossing out personal attacks.

For most people, yes, it is entirely irrelevant. It's also perfectly fine that it is something that matters to you. You do realize that different people approach life in different ways than yourself, right?

I needed reliable wheels, and something that was good on gas. How fast/sporty/fun-to-drive the car is was so far down on the list it might as well be considered non-existent.

Then you should have nabbed a prius or an insight. A bloated vanilla mobile that gets 30mpg is just mediocre on all fronts, even from the viewpoint of a stingy penny pincher.

A prius/insight is way more expensive, and way more complicated of a vehicle than a standard 2.0 4-banger. You probably missed it in the MacNN profile thread, but no other dealership offered me anywhere near 7 grand for my 2000 GMC Sonoma trade-in, that coupled with KIAs retardedly awesome warranty and roadside assistance made the sale.

Also, how exactly is it bloated? Curb weight of my car is 2700lbs, curb weight of a 99 Neon is 2400lbs. Considering all the extra airbags and such 300 lbs ain't no thang.

I too bought a Kia this week. I simply searched craigslist for "2011" and then "2010" and then "2009" etc, with my price limit of $8000, until I found an acceptable car (not salvage title, not on consumer reports "cars to avoid" list, not hatchback). What I found was an 08 Kia Optima, and I bought it. So far so good, knock on wood. I'm grateful for the blowhards like Ca$h for helping keep the stigma up and the price down

Oh and for the record, good luck with the black paint. I won't own a black car again if I can help it. I'd suggest you Klasse it instead of wax it, since real wax will visually slide off the car leaving streaks on hot days. Klasse will last over 6 months by comparison. It's pretty easy to apply as well.

Thanks for the tip. I've owned a black car before so I know what a pain they are to keep looking clean, I'll look into Klasse.

It's a new car and I like it, big fuggin deal. A lot of other people like it too. Why do you feel the need to take so much time criticizing that? Spending your time arguing with people and criticizing people on internet message boards is fun for you? A constructive and enjoyable use of your time? Just voice your opinion in one or two replies and move on...why waste so much time dwelling on it and being a prick and making yourself look like a jackass?

A couple people were curious about the cars I'm checking out at the upcoming Pebble Beach auction. So, here they are:

1960 Aston DB4, this car makes my knees weak. It's the actual car shown at the 1960 NYC auto show. Updated by AM to Vantage specifications and a tested 303 BHP:

4978/width/350/height/700[/IMG]
4983/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

1952 Jaguar XK120, customized by Jaguar:

4979/width/350/height/700[/IMG]
4984/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

1962 Alfa Giulietta Spider, always wanted one and this one has never needed mechanical restoration. All numbers match:

4980/width/350/height/700[/IMG]
4985/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

Another outside possibility is a `57 Thunderbird E-Code, but only at below their low-end estimate (not all numbers match).

4981/width/350/height/700[/IMG]
4982/width/350/height/700[/IMG]

Nice cars Shaddim. I hope you get one for a good price at auction and then take us all for rides.

sdilley14: About a year ago I replaced my 1992 Camry with a 2004 Accord. I'm obviously happy driving a car that isn't 20 years old, but I still miss my Camry because of some of the small things.

Also, I am one of those people that is perfectly happy driving the most boring family sedans out there. Sure, I'd love a Tesla Model S, but I can't afford one. It isn't that I don't care about performance or looks, just that they are way down near the bottom of my priorities. Reliability, cost, and safety round out the top three.
