I took a look at the temperature my MacBooks been running at. And its 57 degrees Celsius. I wonder if thats a safe temperature and I'm not sure if the fans are working when they are supposed to be.

Yes, that's fine. It will start to protect itself around 85C (forced downclocking) and finally force a power off above 100C.

Is smcFanControll a good utility to use to cool it down so its more comfortable on my lap? I'm just wondering if there was any risk for overrunning the fans or anything. I'm sorry if my questions sound stupid.

Yes, smcfancontrol will let you turn them up to reduce the temperature.
Brush DC fans have some finite lifetime, and I think it's fair to assume that using them more will shorten that lifetime.

I think that's from iStat. Very handy little app.
