Yes, it does. But it gives you the option for both, since both Mac OS X 10.3.5 Update and Security Update 2004-08-09 BOTH apply to Mac OS X 10.3.4. Sure, "installing" both is unnecessary, but customers who aren't ready to upgrade to 10.3.5 can apply Security Update 2004-08-09 *separately* while staying at 10.3.4.

Component: libpng (Portable Network Graphics)
CVE-IDs: CAN-2002-1363, CAN-2004-0421, CAN-2004-0597,
CAN-2004-0598, CAN-2004-0599
Impact: Malicious png images can cause application crashes and could
execute arbitrary code

Description: A number of buffer overflows, null pointer dereferences
and integer overflows have been discovered in the reference library
for reading and writing PNG images. These vulnerabilities have been
corrected in libpng which is used by the CoreGraphics and AppKit
frameworks in Mac OS X. After installing this update, applications
that use the PNG image format via these frameworks will be protected
against these flaws.

Note: The libpng security fixes are also available separately for Mac
OS X 10.3.4 and Mac OS X 10.2.8 via Security Update 2004-08-09.

<Noob Question>

If I download the 10.3.5 update from Software Update as a package, can I treat it as a combo updater or do I need to wait for an official release?

I don't think the combo updater has been posted yet but they usually soon follow the regular update. It covers all updates from 10.3.1. It is a larger download but is usually a good way to go.

If you wait for the combo, it is a good time to do a backup. Doubt you will need to but it is a good habit none the less.

Fisherking.

Can you go into Library/Receipts and delete the 10.3.5 package and then do the update again? If that doesn't do it maybe you could try the same when the combo is posted.

No problems for me here.

It seems that the PNG referenced here no longer crashes Safari.

As I understand it, Panther now tailors the update to your specific machine, so not a good idea to apply it to another. There'll be a combo update soon, I'd wait for that.

Erm, Combo update came out at the same time. I used it to update my eMac from 10.3.3 straight to 10.3.5
Size was around 88mb if I remember rightly.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

After updating my dual 867, ran some UT2k4 benchmarks. Exactly the same FPS as 10.3.4. What is funny, is I get the same exact FPS on low to highest graphical settings. So something must be b0rked in UT itself.

Installed 10.3.5 on 400 MHz Pismo PowerBook. 640 MB RAM.

No problems at all, and Safari seems to load the forums quicker. This is the only discernible difference I have noticed.

i've installed on my powerbook and the g4 desktop...no problems with either (as usual). when they post the combo update i usually d/l that as well and keep it around on a cdrw, just as a "just in case" thing should i ever need to reinstall and not have a broadband connection handy.

So far, it seems to be working OK - I installed it on my PowerBook, and also my Cube. But on the Cube, it seems to have killed the temperature utilities that worked perfectly happily under 10.3.4.

Temperature Monitor launches, and then quits with the following message:

And ThermoInDock doesn`t launch at all!

I know that these utilties don`t give accurate readings for the PPC 7400 (original 450MHz G4) CPU in my Cube; but they are useful as indicators of temperature change.

Anyone know why 10.3.5 doesn`t mix well with the apps (and why my PowerBook wasn`t similarly affected - Temp Monitor works fine on my PB)?

PowerBook G4, 1.25GHz, 1GB, 5400rpm 80GB HDD
PowerMac G4 Cube, 450MHz, 512MB, 7200rpm 120GB HDD, GigaDesigns Blue LED 80mm fan
AirMac Extreme network, connected to my FTTH (100Mb/s) phat pipe 8)

I'm surprised that they posted the combo as quick as they did. It usually takes them a few days.

For some reason I still have the old UT2003 demo, but I gave it a whirl on my ghz Tibook/Radeon 9000 with the graphics/detail settings maxed out, and it played like a champ. The CnC Generals Demo is running so much more smoothly, too. I didn't notice anything dramatic to the full version of Call Of Duty, but it's already been performing very well on my Powerbook.

As far as gaming is concerned, this seems update seems to be a huge improvement!

Fixed an annoying issue.

When you mount an NFS share, and copy files via the finder, it was dog ass slow in 10.3.4

This issue has been fixed.

Edit: P.S. every time an update comes out, somebody has trouble with it (while 99.9% don't). Doing the above is a good way to help prevent it, though sometimes it just happens for no logical reason at all. This has been the case with every update to OS X, so it shouldn't surprise anyone.
The conservative approach is always:

- check the disk
- repair permissions
- use the combo updater (as it tends to be more benign on iffy systems)

I just installed the update and suddenly Mac OS X is recognizing only 1gb of my 1.25gb of RAM.......! It seems to see my Kingston RAM but not the factory installed stuffs. ARGH.

The OS is certainly no faster either and most applications are much more sluggish.

Haven't really tested much out yet... I can say that after updating I chose to restart (instead of just shutdown and restart myself) and the system hung on the logoff/shutting down screan (the aqua one w/ the circular moving progress thinger). I let it sit for about 30 min while watching TV as I figured it might actually be doing something. After some time I simply did a hard restart. The comp booted into OSX fine and finder shows that OSX 10.3.5 is indeed installed. I had a very wierd crash with AIM, and my motorola v600 still doesnt' seem to connect properly via bluetooth... but I haven't found any major problems... haven't tried any games yet...

If someone is looking at your swap files, it is already too late. Security is already compromised.

1035 seems to be working fine - possibly a bit quicker on Safari (17" FP iMac 800Mhz). Mark you, I did use Panther setup disc to repair permissions before and after the update, and Mac Sweeper before also.

All is running fine and the increase in graphics performance (games and other software) is noticeable.

This appears to be the first update that found all my apps in the locations I put them in

I really hope it does fix the VM freezing issue though (fingers crossed).

New problem detected:
when connecting to a iDisk Public User's Folder, now a dialog appears asking for login/password. Sure enough, the login is user, but the pasword... Leaving it blank leads to a l/p error.
Didn't happen in 10.3.4.

That's why there is FileVault. However if FileVault is useless when you're computer is stolen (which it is if the password is in the swap file), then FileVault is useless.

same for me on a new dual 2ghz G5. restarted the machine again this morning and it started with the circular progress going for a few seconds and then the machine powered itself off completly. i powered the machine back on and it came up ok. however, once i logged in, i got a message saying that my clock was wrong. it had been set to the wrong time and a 1967 date. reset, reboot and so far all ok. not feeling good about it though.

yeah something is messed up there. (make sure vsync is OFF)
