Have had Pods since the original 5G model, last one a 2nd gen 20G model. Just got a 80G video; one thing I noticed is that without the backlight, the screen is very hard to read. So bad, that it's almost impossible. VERY much darker than my 2nd gen without any backlight. Means I MUST enable a blast f the backlight, whereas with my 2nd gen I almost never had to use the backlight.

Is this normal?

The issue is with the colored screen versus monochrome... Colored screens have shading and whatnot and it makes it very hard to read them without any backlight, whereas monochrome screens with the right contrast level and be read much better when the backlight isn't on.
