I attended my first big production musical last night at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati. Les Misérables. I thought it was a great play and I had a good time. Anyone else seen this?

Good show...
I'm working in a performance of West Side Story. I'm not a big musical fan, but this music is great fun to play.

You should read the book it is an excellent book. Lots of beautiful description and if you read French it is even better.

Yeah, I saw it in London... absolutely amazing, I think.
Dunno if its my favorite... I like Fiddler on the Roof a lot, too.

Agreed on both counts. I can't read French, but I've read the English and it's very good depending on what translation you're using. My wife has read it in both languages, and from what she's told me the French really does work better: it leans heavily on concepts and devices that just don't translate well.

Often with classics it is very hard to translate, like Dickens would be very hard to translate and Steinbeck has a very poetic musical style.
By the way I saw Les Miserables in London and that was amazing; I think it worked better because of the British accent.

Yeah, I love the show. It's nearing the end of its run, though, from what I understand. I guess they're putting it to bed for awhile.

Almost everything works better with a British accent. Too bad everyone realizes that I'm faking when I do it.

Not sure which production you're referring to...but just fyi, the Broadway production closed in spring of 2003, but they are already reviving it this fall for a supposed limited six month run. Very strange...but people seem happy about it.

I think I'm thinking of the Touring production, which, according to the posters up at the Civic Center, is on its last go-around before shutting down.

Yup, fantastic production.
I travel a lot, and go to a lot of shows. If you ever get to NYC, you can get some great last minute deals for Broadway shows (not the newer ones obviously).

I saw Les Mis when it was on Broadway. I also did a production of it. The tour is coming to an end in a few months. To mark the 20th anniversary Cameron Mackintosh is producing a limited (6 month) run on Broadway, with the opening scheduled for December.
