My office just got a MacPro (quad core) for our new video production department.

We did not order RAM from Apple simply because of the cost, I can generally get RAM for 1/4 of the price from local vendors that is fully compatible.

The question is, according to the Crucial wizard, the type of memory I need is: DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=5 • Fully Buffered • ECC • DDR2-800
Computer memory upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core Xeon 5400 Series) Desktop/PC from Crucial.com

The closest match I could Memory Size:
Memory Speed: 667MHz PC5400

Memory CAS Latency: 5-5-5

Memory Type: ECC FB-DIMM DDR2

URL: Crucial Apple 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667Mhz FB-DIMM Memory CT25672AP667 in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

Would this RAM from TD be compatible?

Thanks in advance.

You can only get at or above the spec (when it comes to rated speed but not type) Apple specifies. The RAM you found is below what Crucial told you to get. Just match the requirements Apple specifies.

800Mhz FB-DIMMs are still in short supply some places... maybe Newegg will ship across the border?

mduell >> yep, that's what I"m finding. I've tried several of my preferred vendors, but no one has them in supply. I'll have to look into NewEgg shipping across the border, thanks for the idea!

Another ++ for OWC.

The have good service, good RAM, and a no hassle warranty policy. Your RAM goes bad 5 years down the road? They exchange it for a new stick.

Who wouldn't? You really shouldn't be buying RAM without a lifetime warranty.

Thanks everyone for your responses.

I ended up putting in an order through Throne Computer, a local vendor in Toronto. If anyone in the GTA is looking for any kind of corporate computer services, I highly recommend them as I've used them since I moved to Toronto in 2005. I mentioned looking for the RAM in passing, I had a quote in my email less than an hour after getting off the phone. Good enough for me, and they've gained my trust over the course of the previous 3 yrs.

Dear mpancha

I am a complete idiot amateur who should receive, I am ashamed to say, a Mac Pro 8 core in a few days, and am lookng for a tip in terms of video production. What video card have you installed in yours? Or do you firewire the camera into the mac pro and do all in FCP?

Why are you ashamed to admit to getting a top of the line computer? Yes, for video editing you use Firewire to import the video into an editor such as Final Cut Express or Pro.
