Every once in a while when I send an email message to someone at their old email address I get this message back that the email was undeliverable with the word daemon in it. I have a couple of people who email me that I want to drop and would like to know what bouncing email does. Do they get a message that their email is undeliverable or what?

When you receive a bounced email, it's simply the destination server letting you know that the account you're trying to reach doesn't work. It's the email equivilent of the message you get when dialing a number that's no longer in service.

When you bounce an email, Mail does its best to duplicate that type of message and send it back to the original sender. For the casual email it will probably fool them into thinking that your email is no longer valid. If you try using it on spammers, they may not be so easily fooled... so take your chances with them.

LOL, well, that's an interesting way of putting it.

Basically, don't expect the Spam Bot to take your bounced email as a notification to "unsubscribe".

I just want to quietly drop a "friend" of mine without having to explain to him that I'm tired of him getting me down. I'll probably ignore him for awhile and then do the bounce thing and then get rid of him on my Facebook.

It'll probably work perfectly for that. Just be sure to consistently bounce every email he sends once you do it the first time. Otherwise it will look fishy if some make it through and others get bounced.
