When I want to save a .htaccess file a popup says that files that start with a "." are used by the system and will be hidden. How do I unhide the file so I can upload it to my server?

Download TinkerTool and use it to opt to show hidden files in the Finder. Relaunch the Finder and you will be able see it (along with numerous other hidden files). Once done, use TinkerTool to hide them again.
