The subaru XT, or XT6:

Retractable door-handle flaps
Single front wiper blade
Steering wheel with a single vertical and a single horizontal spoke
Pistol-grip shifter
Microprocessor engine and transmission management
Steering wheel with both tilt and reach adjustment
Instrument cluster that tilted with the steering wheel
Furthermore, some models were equipped with additional features:
Digital instrument cluster that tilted with the steering wheel
Trip computer with range/fuel management facilities
Pneumatic suspension with height control
Push-button four wheel drive (later changed to all wheel drive)

Thinking about getting one of htese for a daily driver in a year or so. They're cheap... little baby turbo... awd... and manual transmission.

80's cars not so much. I mean it looks like a saturn and those pop-up lights always break.

The only way to salvage cool out of it is to give it some ridiculous metallic paint job with flames from the tires.

THEN it will be so ugly it is cool.

My advice:

1) Don't pimp it out... or it will look like junk.
2) Make it look like this:

You should be more careful.

I had a Probe for a few years with both pop up headlights and wraparound windows. I liked it.

My wife's 89 accord has pop up headlights and 239,000 miles. Still work just fine. I think they break when you're a dumb secretary bitch who leaves them down in the winter before a huge snow/ice storm. Luckily, my wife has the intelligence needed to leave them in the up position during the winter.

Some of the pop-up lights did have a rep for breaking.

Ones that used vacuum eventually had broken vacuum hoses, or bad boosters for them.

Some that use little plastic gears eventually broke. Replacing the gears with delrin ones helped.

Some models had more frequent motor burnout.

Still, they're for the most part a pretty common design and most cars that have them are fairly well engineered.

I think I'm definitely going ot get one of these cars. They're dirt freaking cheap, and supposedly pretty fun to drive.

Is that the Pontiac Aztec?

That's the first car I thought of when I saw this thread.

It is THE ugliest car ever made...except for possibly the AMC Gremlin.

It was ugly and underpowered then and it is even more ugly and underpowered now. My take on these is Subaru was trying to be hip and cool, and just failed miserably.
Just get a Brat. At least they have the super cool death wish seats in the back.

The XT6 had 170hp from a 2.7 liter flat six. That isn't exactly underpowered since they only weigh 2500lbs or so.

How is no turbo better than turbo? Any engine with a turbo makes more power than without.... so... ????

Naturally aspirated engines are always more responsive to throttle than turbo ones. And since they're more responsive and don't have a major power jump when the turbo comes on-song, they're easier to control the angle of attack in. You know, steer with your right foot, that kind of thing.

More power does not always equal more fun.

Not all turbo cars have an 'instant on' turbo at some point in the RPM band. And... sorry.. although I think RWD is fun, really fun, I still think AWD is a blast. Especially if it's got rear bias.

Turbo= more torque. And a 2.7 liter flat six should be plenty torquey. Hehehe. What's really neat is their adjustable suspension... you can lift it up, or slam it down, from inside the car for onroad or offroad use. heh. Sweet.

Another shining example of the ugly designs of the 1980s; although, the dashboard's cheesiness is somewhat cool. However, I'd get sick of the Pole Position dash after a while, and it does not make up for the rest of the car looking ugly.

No, but they all have a throttle response delay.

This is why proper drivers always choose a natural 911 (like a GT3) over a turbo 911 (like a GT2). They just feel better because the throttle response is sharper.

And it's why Ferrari haven't done a turbo since the 288GTO/F40 era.

And it's why Lambo don't do a turbo.

Yeah, but that throttle response comes at a huge price: gas. Having a smaller engine with a turbo gives you the power of a larger one, without the hefty gas bills (as long as you aren't on constant boost).
