Am shopping black friday sales for new laptop for the kid... new enough to play minecraft at the very least. I have to convince my husband not to get her just a $200 lenovo, why a 5yo mac is better... but aside from that are there advantages to pro vs air? I was thinking imac but sometimes she likes to take it to a friends house to LAN. ~$500 is prob around the budget.

hows this? all the used airs sold out. New airs are at bestbuy for $999.

Minecraft is all about CPU power. Also you won't be able to do modded on 4GB or ram.
One thing to think of though is the batterie aren't user replaceable so at 5yrs you probably want to consider the cost of a battery replacement in there as well.

Consider ebay also. Be sure the ad posts the battery cycle count. Under 100 cycle is a battery with life to burn.

ebay has always seemed dicey... but worth a shot.

any other recommended stores than macofalltrades?

smalldog.com seems to only have newer refurbs, nothing <$1k.

You need ~4GB for modded minecraft so any total amount over that is fine.
