looking at picking up 22 inch lcd from gateway. But its resolution is only 1680x1050 which is the same as in the MBP 17"!!! I'm afraid that the resolution is too low for viewing lets say two word docs side by side

I think it can fit 2 documents side by side. my ibook screen is 1024 wide and a word document takes up maybe 65% of that width.

Yes, it is a little bit low for that size for a modern screen, but it all depends on how far away you sit, your eyesight and personal preference. If you're the type that used to go for 19" 1280x1024 screens, even though the res was the same as a 17", then it should suit you well.

20-22" LCDs tend to be 1680 x 1050. Hit the 23" and 24" for 1920 x 1200.

If you want more pixels, there are 22" 3840x2400 LCDs available; the IBM T221 comes to mind.

What broken OS/apps are you using that can't scale fonts?

Mac OS X? I know that's specifically why I got a 1280x1024 19" screen; the text in system menus was too small otherwise. But as was said already, it's all to do with how good your eyes are and mine are not good.

I just picked up a Westinghouse 22" monitor (on sale for Black Friday) and it looks great. Sitting next to my MacBook Pro, the pixel density isn't nearly as high, but it still works for the size. This is the size and resolution of the original Cinema Display from back in the day, so it is certainly useable.
