Vista used the same WMF parsing code that the previous version of Windows used. Just as with the previous versions, enabling DEP will protect you from this flaw (or you can download the patch).

The beta is what they use to work out all the issues so the final product will be better.

If the Beta has troubles, then...
They can be fixed for the final version.

I realize that...I figured that MS was using a different codeing for security...well seems like the same old same old with Vista (a.k.a. XP 2006)

They reused some image parsing code. The code was bad. What's your point? Do you expect them to write new jpeg, gif, tiff, and wmf parsing code with every OS release? Are you saying they haven't written anything from scratch or replaced anything?

vista still has time to fix all the security bugs before it launches in the fall..... but being that it's microsoft there will be a thousand more fixes to come after the launch.......

still it's only in the beta mode.......

That's not exactly a glowing commendation.

The security in Vista is STILL better than any other Windows version ever. This is 100% true. Further, there were a bunch of security issues when XP Service Pack 2 was in beta-a BUNCH of 'em.

Frankly, this seems like a non-issue. The WMF vulnerability was only recently discovered, and this code was thought to be secure so it was used. Since it's not, you can expect that NEW code that does not have the vulnerability will be used in the next beta version. No big deal. Really. This is what beta testing is for.

Added: I forgot to mention that the WMF vulnerability was found in XP, NOT in Vista; MS actually figured out that they'd used the same module in Vista and fixed it when they produced the patch for XP. They ARE getting better...

rewriting the entire OS from scratch would absolutely break backwards-compatibilty (the one great strength of the Wintel world). But that is really the only way to fix many of the underlying issues once and for all. However, I don't think M$ has the gonads to attempt something like the OS9-->OSX transition.

P.S. that isn't totally fair, with M$ having a freakin' huge user-base, many of which are still running windows 9x, such a transition would be easily 2x-4x more painful for the PC world than the move to OSX was for the macheads (not to mention that kind of move would open the door for alternative OSs, like OSX-x86, to move in).
