If I recall correctly, in the 20th century the Australians devised a clever method of removing impure races.

Granted, but someone else invented the stamp two years later, which people actually used.

No, American / British
Refrigeration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes it did, it was invented by a Brit
Penicillin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No mention of Australia
Flu treatment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
No, this was invented by the South American Indians before the 1944 London Olympics, Australia didn't use it till six years later (when they made up their own name). Front crawl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yes the Americans invented it.

This has got to be the most Anally retentive thing I have ever done.
but it goes to show that Brass is correct, and Australians do seem to think they are better than they are, but taking credit for other peoples inventions is a bit cheeky.
Sheesh... so much of that is not quite what I was trying to say. Eg, I never said the first flu vaccine was invented in Australia. I guess I should not have tried to summarise so much. I was talking about a particular type of flu vaccine.
For some of your other examples, I can't say how correct they are or mine were one way or the other. Wikipedia says one thing, other web sites say another. I think we all know that the web is not the most reliable source of accurate information.
In any case, I got my list from a couple of other web sites. If they are wrong, so be it, but I woudn't discount them all based simply on Wikipedia.

I've no idea if it is true or not, but the notion certainly does not originate from Rainman. I remember people saying it well before Rainman was produced. I believe it is (or was) based on the number of crashes (zero at the time?), not the number of fatalities.

Certainly not devised in Australia, but sadly very much used. 19th Century and 20th. Not something I consider a good source of jest, either.
In HG Wells original 1898 book, "War of the Worlds", he likens the Martian invasion of Earth and their attempts to wipe out humans to the English invasion of Tasmania (Australia) and wiping out the entire race of Tasmanian Aborigines, which actually did happen (the English, not the Martians).
However, Australia is certainly not alone, or even first, in it's colonial attempts at persecuting traditionally native inhabitants. South Africa and even America has their fair share, as do many others. Tasmania is a very small island, and therefore the extinction was relatively easy to achieve (whether it was deliberate or not).

Sweeds did this earlier...
And Ive never seen Rainman, I know since the 70s Qantas always had the best reputation.

I think, in general, that we do have an inflated view of our contribution to world society. I think we have this in common with most countries that are seen to be fiercely patriotic.
However, I do think that we punch above our weight in many things. By weight I mean population, GDP and remoteness.
I think the best thing we have invented is the myth that there are animals and bugs everywhere that will kill you. It helps to minimise the number of poms and sepos that come over to fill up the country! You don't need to point out that this is ironic coming from a guy that has left his home country and has gone to live in another

Nobody else's is inflated, from what I can tell they all earned it, the US, UK, and most of western Europe have contributed 95% of the brains behind everything we take for granted, so they have a right to be arrogant!

The Tasmanian Devil technically isn't Australian, I think.

You appear to be missing the point. Whilst I am quite the fan of patriotism (the British could do with a bit more pride about their country, and not just when the football is on), an extremely common side effect of it is for the patriot to think that their country is better than most others, or that the world would be at an end if it weren't for their country's contribution. I have experience with people like that from many countries.
Moonmonkey, what is your nationality? I wonder if you are from the US, UK or most of western Europe thus "have a right to be arrogant" and excuse the contribution from other countries such as those that Rumor mentioned. If you aren't one of those nationalities, then maybe you are from a country that doesn't inflate its importance, or...
... you aren't one of the people that many of us (including you and I ) are making sweeping generalisations about!

Hmmm, As a Yank taking the third person perspective here, I never really thought of the Tasmanian Devil as an "Achievement from the last 200 years", but more of a small furry marsupial native to the island of Tasmania, but that's just me.

I'm sorry, but I don't believe anybody has the right to be arrogant. Arrogance is rarely anything but offensive.
But aside from that, someone being arrogant about somebody else's achievements, is a little silly. Just because they happen to have been in the same country.
Similarly, although patriotism is a good thing, some people take it way to far, as though the human beings in one country are more value than the human beings in another country. In it's extreme, it could be used as an argument for slavery and all sorts of other inhumane practices (thankfully not many take it to this extreme these days, but people do talk other people down simply because they're not from their own country - senseless).

Never mind the fact that Tasmania is part of Australia, but the Tasmanian Devil was also native to mainland Australia before it was rendered extinct there 400 years before European Settlers arrived.

Not so much... but several centuries ago, chinese civilisation was supposedly far more advanced than 'western' cultures. Two of their achievements were, Gunpowder/Pyrotechnics, Pasta (noodles).
