From what I've heard the ash is white, grey and black. Typical ash.

Some great pics from the current eruption.

oh, and my fiancee just told me she will be flying over the volcano tomorrow with the Nordic Volcano Institute(or whatever it is called in English). I'm sure she'll take some pics as well.

Only moderately apropos, but I just read recently John McPhee's book The Control of Nature. One of the parts is on attempts to divert lava (by cooling it with seawater, for the most part) away from a harbor. This was in Iceland in the 70s, IIRC. Good book. I've walked right up to lava in Hawaii and it is pretty amazing. Geology is so slow that I sort of don't expect to be able to see it happening even on the scale of a lifetime. But (at least in certain places) things happen fairly quickly and all the time.

It seems like the eruption has decreased significantly overnight. Which surprises most who were monitoring it. There might be a new smaller eruption under the glacier east of the first one but it hasn't been verified yet.

My fiancee is flying over it now and hopefully she'll get some good pics. I'll post them later tonight.

As promised, the pics!

http://www.hi.is/~glb/Eruption/

39 pics taken by my fiancee. Varying quality but quite a few good. Also added a few good ones in there not related to the eruption itself but were taken on the same flight.

Don't have time to describe what's happening on every pic right now so if there is anything you'd like to know what is or what's happening feel free to ask.

Cool pics! Unfortunately this eruption wasn't quite powerful enough to sink that island. Here's hoping for next time!!
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

Don't worry Katla will erupt in the next few years and will severely destroy a large part of the island. Then we can also expect one of the big ones to erupt soon. That will "force" us to move

Yup, that was in Vestmannaeyjar. My dad worked there as a volunteer trying to save peoples belongings from the lava flowing through the village.

<whisper> I have a CBS(IIRC) show on it that I could "share" with you guys if you want </whisper>

Here's a few pics from that eruption:

Latest news are that the eruption might be over. Which is weird compared to how it started.

I'll keep you updated if there is anything new that comes up.
