My Powerbook G4 550mhz OSX 10.2 takes a long time to get through the grey screen on bootup. Any idea what could be causing this? I've searched and seen this problem in other threads, but the replies were pretty weak.

Has it just suddenly started taking this long or have you just received it and think it's taking a longer than it should amount of time?

I've had the exact same problem with my ibook/600 for quite some time, since upgrading to Jaguar actually. The grey (formerly happymac) screen takes FOREVER to finish its business... but once I get past that it boots in about 20 seconds.

One of the reasons I went ti hunting... only 4 more days

Thanks,

Alex

Sleeping works for me as well...I was unimpressed with OS X's bootup time compared to WinXP, however, I've slept mine everynight for the time I've had it (4/3/03) and have only Shut Down twice. Wakes from sleep in a matter of seconds every time, perfectly.

AssassyN: Almost as long as I remember, I think it must have been faster in the 10.1 era or something... It's a problem I've had for a long time, so long that I don't remember it being any other way almost lol... I just never got around to asking about it.

I think sleeping it is the next best thing

I've also been spoiled by fast WinXP startup times

Thanks, guys

I think the long boot delay at the grey screen could be a ram check thing, I find that if I turn the machine on it waits a bit and then once it gets passed that grey screen it gets top the login screen in a few seconds. It doesn't seem to pause for as long at the beginning screen if you restart your mac as opposed to powering it on.

I put mine to sleep all the time.

The RAM check occurs immediately after the power-on chime - when the screen turns grey (from being black) the RAM check is complete.

10.1.x was around 10 seconds faster at starting than 10.2.x - allegedly Apple have put a lot of effort into speeding up the boot sequence in 10.3

Given OSX only needs a warm boot in rare circumstances, and there's only a tiny handful of reasons to do a cold boot, the startup time isn't very relevant anyway

Yup...I posted this problem about 6 months ago or so...don't know. I just turn it on and go grab a cup of water and come back.

Doesn't really bother me anymore.

Possibly related to the HD check. I'm gonna play and see if I can figure this out after I finish my exams.

is this whole thing one of the issues with 10.2 that should hopefully be solves with Panther? How long of a boot are we talking here? all thsi stuff is relative, so grab yuor stop watch and give some more info. I'd bet that Panther will show some improvement in the boot time--maybe.
