If you've been around for a while, chances are you've heard us gush about Toca Boca, a company that makes creative, exploration, and role-playing-based apps for kids. The apps are gender-neutral, highly interactive, and they have some of the coolest, most colorful characters we've come across in a kids app. The developers continue this trend with
Toca Life: City, an app that takes you inside the world of Toca Boca.
Toca Life: City is an app that gives kids the chance to explore the world of Toca Boca. You get to visit places like the hip restaurant district, the cool hair salon, the bustling shopping mall -- and on top of being able to visit these places, almost every item can be interacted with in at least one way; whether it be picking it up and moving it, or using it to perform an action.
In the salon, the hair dye will dye the hair of the characters. In the mall, you can change the clothing of the patrons by dragging it off the rack and onto their heads. The people can eat food, hold objects, and switch out accessories. Because of this, we'd like to think that this cute app is the ultimate waiting room or car trip app, as there's so much to explore that it's sure to keep kids busy for quite some time!
Our favorite thing about Toca Life: City is that it features tons of characters we've already come to know and love. The Yeti from
Toca Kitchen is running his own food truck now, and the girl from Toca Kitchen is now cutting hair in
Toca Salon. Each character you uncover in the game is like a little Easter egg, which we think would be fun for kids and parents to sit down and explore together.
While it's not as roleplay-oriented as Toca Kitchen,
Toca Lab, or Toca Salon, it's certainly not any less fun. We think that this is a great app for little kids who enjoy some quiet game time on the iPhone or iPad.
Toca Life: City is available for both iPad and iPhone, and costs $3.
What kid would enjoy Toca Life: City:
Little kids who enjoy pop-up books, or other Toca apps, are going to really dig this app, and we recommend it for any kids ages 2-6.
What kid wouldn't enjoy Toca Life: City:
Older kids around 7-10 will likely get tired of this app quickly, as there's no objectives to complete.
