In a practical sense, race does not mean nothing. Depending on where you live, it can mean a great deal to your day-to-day life. There are still places in the world where people are shunned or killed for being the wrong race.

Of course, those places are not America, but I don't think it's obviously true to say "race means nothing." Most of the difference race makes is because of the meaning people assign it in their minds, but that's still something.

This reminds me of something that happened about 10 years ago in Québec. In 1996, Jean-Louis Roux, who was then the lieutenant-governor of the province of Québec, got in trouble because it was discovered that in 1942, at the age of 19, he wore a swastika on a suit, as a prank. As a result, he had to resign from his position. Come on! The man was now 73 and led a very successful and respectable life!

Same thing with the "Harry the Nazi" episode a few years ago. It was at a fricking costumed party! If that's unacceptable, why is it to allow kids to wear bin ladin mask at halloween? Doesn't that show a lack of respect for the families of the people killed on 9/11 and the soldiers in Irak? While we're at it, they should also ban British-related items, that's an offense to my French-Canadian ancestors, who got killed massively hundreds of years ago at the hand of the British...

I agree, but in this particular case, I think it's understandable. If I were victimized by the KKK, I probably wouldn't see a whole lot of funny in people coming to school dressed that way either. And frankly, I don't believe these costumes were meant to be funny — good money they knew the reaction it would evoke and chose to go looking like KKK supporters just to be dicks.
