Hi,
Just got a 256 DIMM, popped it in. It shows up as 128!!!
the sticker says 256, the invoice says 256, my wallet says 256.
Before I get on the phone and bitch:
assuming for a moment that the ram is labeled correctly
is this possible?
is half of it defective?
will it show up if I switch slots?
is this just a bug in OSX?
it's PC133, the other 2 chips are 64MB PC100 on a G3 350
Thanks

it is either a bad chip, or the motherboard isn't compatible with it. check the motherboard out wiht another 256mb stick, if that one waorks and is by the same MFG then you got a bad chip, if it doesn't work, then your mobo is having problems handeling the 256mb sticks. find out what mfg they have been tested for at that size and then go and buy the ram from that mfg.

I bought a 128 MB from MacMall recently, and it did the same thing. My chip is from Team Memory. I contacted the mfg and the guy agreed to send me a replacement. He said it was their fault, and that the memory was not compatible with my Mac. Two weeks later, he sent me two 64MBs as replacement. The only problem is that I only have one empty slot, and my other slots are filled up by higher capacity memory. Turns out I am getting quite angry, and I can never seem to get a hold of the company since then.
If your memory's brand is Team Memory, I think you're in for a b*tchy ride.

My educated guess is that the RAM will work or it won't. If there were such a problem with it that would make half of it fail, I don't believe it would work at all. My educated guess is that you got the wrong DIMM.

I believe that certain chip density DIMMs (how many individual memory chips are on the DIMM) will only show half their memory available.
These are not fully compatible with the Mac's memory controller.
Getting a lower chip density (i.e. 16 chips down to 4 chips) DIMM should help.
