< sorry - premature submission >

I know I can buy a stock config (4 gigs of RAM) at Amazon with free shipping and no tax (9.5% in CA). I also have the option of buying through my employers EPP site to save a whopping 6%.

No brainer is to buy at Amazon, but I am thinking of maxing out memory to 8 gig.

QUESTION
If I buy the 4 gig pre-cofigured model, I have to toss those sticks and get 2 2X4 gigs right?

I think third party prices are around $140...but I may save more by buying the 4 gig pre config model at Amazon and upgrading later.

u can get ram at macsales.com, or newegg.

do the amazon thing, then add ram from some place like the above (i've done this on all my macbooks/powerbooks).

Yes, only two slots in the MBP.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Ahh...16. For some reason I thought the 13" model was limited to 8 gigs.

That's because Apple says it is.

It's not.

Correct. Some vendors like OWC Apple Mac Memory Upgrade Options: Easy Buying Guide, Free Install Videos. Memory backed by Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty. will buy back the OEM DIMMs. I think the net I paid for 8 GB to my MBP was around $90.

2x8 GB is possible but too expensive right now (~$1500).
